TOUCH OF CASCraig Anthony Smith -- raised in Philly on a steady diet of hip hop and r&b, he started flowing early: from memorizing Big Daddy Kanes Raw, to freestyle sessions in the Catholic schoolyard and a slot at the high school talent show. CAS dug deeper into hip hop while in college at IUP -- Craig Garbino came into effect, and he linked up with MCs Brza and Bandit, to form the NEGRO LEAGUE. They would rhyme at house parties and recorded in the school library. People would hear verbal spills from the leaks of the room:
"We had the thing rockin it was sound proof, but not really sound proof. And we would come out and people were like woah what were they just doing in there??!!"
In 2001 CAS moved to San Diego and landed a crib next door to Skyler Mic a Drum & Bass MC, promoter, and producer. He soon met the rest of the local crew including JP, his current partner in Soul Projects. Here CAS upgraded from Garbino to a Touch of CAS.
"Even if the team starts fallin off, Touch of CAS dont stop cant stop. I just need beats, ya know. Ill do a bluegrass song, goddammit. Thats what it boils down to -- if nobody wants to record with me."
CAS has played live with various local acts: a member of the hip hop band Rhythms of Eypp, shows with rock band Stareline Theorie, plus collaborations with jazz fusion bands and other hip hop artists. His Soul Projects album with JP features beats by A*Live & Profile (UpStarts) and major contributions from IZM (IsRecordings) & Destro. CAS also layed out a track for a local mixtape being released by the Epidemics [Summer 2005], and Starline Theorie has invited him to do a song on their latest album, Obon.
"I want it to be the next 10 years of my life. I just want to rhyme and record If I like it and it makes me feel good, then its good, bottom line."
