DJ Joemama

DJ JOEMAMA (born Joseph Koumpounis) was raised in the culturally and historically rich metropolis of Athens Greece, making his way in adolescence to the Washington DC area. Embracing many aspects of pop-culture as well as some scenes in the urban underground sub-culture, DJ JOEMAMA is a true product of the 80's. Once simply labeled a high school drop-out, this only son of a Bolivian barber and a Greek cook is now a self-made success story. By his early 20's DJ JOEMAMA was already a self-taught visual artist, an accomplished pastry chef, a sought after DJ, a globe-trotting entrepreneur and a jack-of-all-trades.
He now resides in southern California, the director of Every Starving Artist (also known as ESA), an event coordination and promotion company, which he founded over a decade ago in Baltimore Maryland. A specialist in multi-genre dance-parties and known for his full spectrum of sound, DJ JOEMAMA has rocked hot-spots coast to coast and places in between. Over the many years his raw ability and energy has been documented on several (live-recorded) mix-tapes, which have reached all four corners of the world and are still available today. DJ JOEMAMA's electric performances can be seen and heard at Free Range, his new San Diego monthly dance-party with fellow resident, Blastmaster Mateo Bambaataa.
Armed and dangerous with a killer arsenal of rare and exotic dance-floor bangers and classic party-rocking jams and gems executed with his signature delivery, DJ JOEMAMA is sure to get the party people on the dance-floor and keep them there. DJ JOEMAMA has had the opportunities to work with some of the hottest DJs in today's club circuit like Cobra Krames of Cobra Kai, along with world-renown producers such as Tittsworth, Grammy nominated live acts like acid jazz pioneers Liquid Soul, acclaimed and established DJ names such as Neil Armstrong of the all mighty 5th Platoon and Platurn of the Oakland Faders, as well as many underground up-and-comers like Boy Elroy, Blondtron, the Gaslamp Killa, the Backyard Bangers and the Shotgun Wedding Quintet, just to name a few. DJ JOEMAMA has also collaborated with (and/or sponsored by) renown brands like Adidas, Fader Magazine, Guerilla Union, Osiris, Re:Up Magazine, Edukation Athletics and Thiry Odd Six, as well as promotional giants like Scion, Cornerstone Promotion, Big Stereo and Red Bull, to name a few.
DJ JOEMAMA thanks the talented circle of friends as his creative influences, names like Maryland's own DJ Smudge, DJ Still Life in NYC and DJ Centipede from San Francisco. He also thanks his fans, friends and family for their endless love and support in his creative endeavors over the years. Mix-tapes from 2006 and 2007 by DJ JOEMAMA are exclusively available at FOS (Future of Style) in the Gaslamp Quarters of San Diego. As well, his ESA gear (mens/womens) are exclusively available at FeeLit in the East Village area of Downtown San Diego. His free monthly dance-party (Free Range) is every first Friday, at the fabulous Kava Lounge, be there and prepare to sweat.
