Unto the furthest flood-brim look with me;
Then reach on with thy thought till it be drown’d.
Miles and miles distant though the last line be,
And though thy soul sail leagues and leagues beyond,—
Still, leagues beyond those leagues, there is more sea.
-Dante Gabriel Rossetti
This page is a place for me to bring various musical impulses out into the open air. It also serves as a scrapbook of sorts for the musical projects I’ve been working on.
I’ve created a separate page for the Hookah Joe’s recordings. It’s called Sunday Night Ensemble. Look below in my top friends section for a link to it. I’ve also got an electronica project germinating in the back of my mind. There may be a page for it coming soon.
Anyway... a bit of explanation of the music above.
The Maqam Kurd Study (for Amy) is a piece for oud and synthesizer(s). I’ve been drawn to the Maqam Kurd (Phrygian Mode) for the last few weeks and have done a bit of preliminary recording. I’ve got a bit more for solo oud in this scale that I may put up soon.
The Flute Experiment is an experiment in signal processing. I’m playing two flutes in this piece (not at the same time). One is a big, low shakuhachi/quena hybrid and the other is a Native American flute in the same scale, an octave higher. I’m running the flute through a couple magic boxes to get that dense, breathy sound.
The Inumbra Excerpt is a piece from a CD of piano music I recorded for my sister for Christmas.
Five Paths may wind up on the electronica page. It’s an all-electronic piece. The title was (lamely) inspired by the 5/4 time signature it’s in.
The photos and graphics in the slideshow above are pictures from Jerusalem Garden and Hookah Joe’s, some obsolete flyers, CD cover artwork and other odds & ends. The video is a promotional video for Jerusalem Garden. I may be updating it soon.
