About Me

SHE POSTED.
SHE WAS A LITTLE BORED
AND A LITTLE DRUNK
AND SHE POSTED.
"STRICTLY BLUES."
I WAS A LITTLE BORED
AND I CRUISED THAT SITE
THAT NIGHT.
"STRICTLY BLUES"
GOT MY ATTENTION
AND I RESPONDED.
WHAT WE FOUND WE HAD
IN COMMON
WAS A NEED FOR
INSTANT GRATIFICATION.
WE WERE BOTH ARTISTS
WHO NEEDED MORE
THAN WE COULD GET ALONE.
SO
WE KINDA BECAME A GROUP
OF TWO.
A SINGER AND A DRUMMER.
SHE POSTED FOR A BASS PLAYER.
NO ONE SHOWED.
I KNEW A BASS PLAYER,
A FINE FELLOW WITH A FAULT.
HE LIVED A LIFE
FREE OF DARKNESS.
THE BOY (BOB) CAN PLAY BASS,
BUT WE,
THE GIRL AND THE DRUMMER,
FEARED LYRIC CONTENT
MIGHT OVERPOWER THE
BOY AND THE BASS.
WE GATHERED OUR TINY
AND MOTLEY CREW
IN A NUMBER OF PLACES
AS WE TRIED TO FIND A
LEAD INSTRUMENT.
WE REHEARSED IN STUDIOS
AND CHURCHES
(REMEMBER THAT BOY?)
AND AUDITIONED THE
GUYS THAT LOOKED RIGHT
BUT HAD NO HEART
AND THE GUYS WITH HEART
WITHOUT THE RIGHT CONNECT
AND WE FINALLY FOUND
JON.
NOW, I LOVE COINCIDENCE.
I PURSUE COINCIDENCE.
JON AND HIS GUITAR
HAD BEEN TO A LOT OF PLACES
I KNEW PERSONALLY.
PERHAPS TOO WELL.
HEART AND MIND AND CHOPS
AND A PAST WITH A VIEW
IS WHAT JON BROUGHT.
AND WE WERE FOUR.
MONTHS OF GETTING TOGETHER
WHERE WE COULD
WHEN WE COULD
SOLIDIFIED THE FACT THAT
BOB THE BASS WAS GETTING
FUNKIER,
JON, WITH HEART AND CHOPS,
WAS GETTNG RESTLESS,
AND WE NEEDED TO PLAY TO
LUMPS OF 98.6.
IN THE PROCESS OF PREPARING
FOR A BAPTISM
WE DECIDED WE NEEDED A FIFTH.
RIGHT.
BOB KNEW A GUITAR PLAYER.
THIS IS TOUGH TO GRASP.
TRYING TO MOLD AND MELD
TAKES TIME.
ADDING ANOTHER SET OF EARS
AND ABILITIES AND ATTITUDES
IN A BLINK,
BLINK,
IS JUST TOUGH STUFF.
BILL ARRIVED
AS A CAPABLE, CONFIDENT
LEAD GUITAR PLAYER
ASKED TO STEP BACK.
THAT'S TOUGH.
JOHN AND JON AND BOB AND BILL.
WE CAN'T HAVE A BAND
IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY
WITH NAMES LIKE THAT.
AT LEAST WE HAVE CJ.
RECKLESS RED IS A CHOICE.
CJ'S CHOICE.
SHE IS THE FACE.
SHE IS RECKLESS
IF IN FACT AND NOT CHOICE.
SHE IS RED,
BUT I WON'T GO THERE.
WHAT I WILL SAY IS
I'M OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW
WHAT I WANT FROM A BAND.
I KNOW CHICK SINGERS
FROM YEARS OF VERY SUCCESSFUL
TRIAL AND TRIAL.
CJ'S GOT THE CHOPS.
SHE'S GOT THE LOOKS.
SHE DEFINITELY KNOWS
WHY SHE'S DRIVEN TO DO THIS
AND WHAT IT SHOULD SOUND LIKE.
RECKLESS RED AIN'T CUTE
OR SLICK
OR COMFORTABLE
BUT IT OUGHT TO GET CJ
INSTANT GRATIFICATION.

CJ Nicolai, vocals
John Ware, drums
Jon Woodhead, guitar
Bill Meyer, guitar
Bob Higgins, bass

CJ Nicolai's bio:
CJ is a California girl who enjoys bands nobody's ever heard of, including her own. She grew up singing gospel in church, and was once asked by her frustrated vocal coach, "Do you want to sing like a man FOREVER?" Yes, I do. Chicks dig it.

John Ware's bio:
He was born and raised in Oklahoma, where the motto stands, "play a drum fill, go to prison." Playing with girls has taken a lifetime...Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, and Emmylou Harris...and CJ is the latest or the last in a fine line.

Jon Woodhead's bio:
Jon left high school at eighteen to go on the road with John Stewart, which led to playing with Ace. He moved to England and eventually came back to play with Leon Russell at the mature age of twenty. After more time on the road with Maria Muldaur and back to Leon again, Jon decided he never wanted to see the inside of a tour bus ever again. His goal is to play as many notes as possible in a single measure as often as he can.

Bill Meyer's bio:
Bill came to Reckless Red with a great background as a blues lead guitarist. His Clapton-influenced style rounds out the sound perfectly.

Bob Higgins' bio:
Bob fell hard for rock n' roll while slamming out Beatles tunes on his first drum kit back in the Chicago 'burbs. He found Colorado sometime in the 80's, and soon discovered the sublime joy of laying down a lean, smooth bass groove. He's been permanently parked on the low end ever since.

Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name. Who cares if they can't spell it. Actually, I think they were being intentionally creative. Maybe they were looking for the word "reek" inste...

God Hates Denver.

Seriously, how much snow does one city need? Can't he spread the love around a little? Think of how much joy a blizzard would bring to, say.... Dallas. Those people would love it. We've had a-plen...

What does Reckless Red sound like?

Great question. Glad you asked! We started this Reckless Red journey on the basis of "blues, all blues, nothing but the blues". Not a bad starting point, but definitely, in retrospect, a starting poi...
