THE ALIBIS started in the spring of 2007 after Austin Harris had moved to Atlanta from Asheville NC a year earlier. After playing solo for several months he began to collaborate with drummer Kevin Albertini to steer the sound towards indie / garage rock; balls to the wall, driving rhythms, creative vocal melodies and hooks. A month later the band was born with Danny Brewer helping them out on bass for their first show. ------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------AUSTIN'S BACKGROUND------------------------------When Austin first arrived in Atlanta, he studied guitar at Atlanta Institute of Music (AIM) before focusing more on songwriting. In Aug 2006, his solo sound initially emerged when he offered to play lead guitar with Billy Gewin who encouraged him to sing his own songs as they played coffee shops and singer/songwriter venues in Atlanta like Eddie's Attic, Red Light Cafe, and Java Monkey.
He has always listened to and played a lot of garage rock, punk, and classic rock, but with an unquenchable hunger to explore other styles of music. Rock has become what it is because of styles like soul, blues, old-time folk, jazz, and reggae, which have all heavily influenced him. ------------------------------------------------------------
BAND HISTORY ------------------------------
After their initial show in May 2007, the three-piece spent the rest of the summer recording a demo. Austin continued to write more songs offering a lyrical depth about everyday people experiencing pain and reaching for healing through meaningful relationships in a community. The recording process of 3 songs (I'm Reaching Out, Grit, and Gloria) dragged on as they fit in random sessions with AIM friend Bill Devlin who recorded them at his home studio. On the 4th of July they finally got the project completed and began frantically booking as many shows as possible which turned out to be 9 for the band in Aug and Sep including Tuscaloosa AL and Athens GA. Out of necessity, a real DIY mentality has emerged, anything from doing all their own booking and publicity to creatively fashioned t-shirts and CDs.
During this time, they also changed band members a few times which ended with the lineup of David Fortner on drums and Liam Harbry on bass. The fluid nature of the band lends itself to easy rotation of different drummers and bassists to fill in for busy members, all of whom are friends at Trinity Vineyard Church, a rich source of musicians and artists. -------------------------------------THE SOUND-------------------------------------
Austin's writing style has displayed a lot of maturity; presently producing a handful of mellowed out indie songs, while maintaining loud and driving choruses. His expert guitar chops leave no need for another guitarist, gliding seamlessly from accenting chords to driving riffs, covering lead and rhythm at the same time. As THE ALIBIS have continued to play in Atlanta and the Southeast, each show has evolved into a very energetic, unique, live experience. You’ll get a decidedly progressive indie vibe amped up with classic, rootsy, garage rock, twisting and turning with lots of inspiring arrangements to sink your teeth into. ------------------------------ www.myspace.com/AustinHarris77
