ALEX LUNATI - BIO
I grew up in Spilamberto (in the district area of Modena) among its historical traditions: The Balsamic Vinegar, The Phantom of Sir Filippo and the legend of the Magalasso (half a snake half a drake).
I started studying classical piano at the age of seven, but my teacher was not very happy with me as I practised more by playing and singing the Beatles’ and Elvis Presley’s tunes (I am still fond of them now) rather than drilling with those quite boring piano exercises she forced me to study. It was at that time that I fell in love with rock’ n’ roll and still today this is the only music genre that really amuses me and makes me feel good even if I listen to everything else too.
In 1986, together with my brother Lor and some other friends from Spilamberto, I put up a band called Tan Zero. We would play a music genre with English lyrics that can be classified as a cross between New Wave and Progressive Rock.
Though we were no more than young boys, in 1987 an independent record company in Modena took notice of us and released our first and only record whose title is We Can’t Imagine. The entire music work was then used by the Roman film director Nico d’Alessandria as the sound track for his movie The Roman Emperor (now considered to be a cult-movie).
In 1991 I joined Francesco Baccini’s band (a well-known Italian singer) as a keyboard player. This co-operation has gone on for years on and off up to this very date. I played with him during some music tours and I took part in the recording of Nudo – Naked-(1993), La notte non dormo mai – I never sleep at night – (2002), Stasera Teatro – Theatre Tonight – (2005) and Fra..gi..le – Fragile –(2006).
I also played the keyboards with an Italian band called Rats where my brother Lor was the drummer and I toured in Italy with them too. I recorded with them two albums, namely Indiani Padani - (1991) and La vertigine del mondo – The vertigo of the world – (1995). In 1997 I joined a music band called Bambini in Bikini – Children in Bikinis – We released a single and we made some appearances on television at quite a well known programme called Roxy Bar conducted by Red Ronnie.
In the year 2000 I took part daily for a period of four months in the broadcast on the national Italian channel called Uno mattina estate (an early morning programme) as singer and keyboard player of a band whose name was I Lunadoro.
Having completed this experience ( a bit too early in the morning) I started thinking of forming a trio band of my own made up of three instruments: keyboards, bass guitar and drums. After some time together with Alex Class and Max Baldaccini I gave rise to the band called Allunati.
Almost as if it was a joke, just to try, we entered the Sanremo’s Academy (Sanremo being the most important Italian music festival) with the song Quando suono il piano – When I play the piano – and quite incredibly, after so many eliminatory steps, we managed to take part in the 53rd Sanremo’s music festival in March 2003 the year it was conducted by the mythical Italian presenter Pippo Baudo. At the festival we sang Chiama di notte – Call at night - , a song I wrote together with Enrico Nascimbeni. Despite with our song we came in only thirteenth we were to be very satisfied later on. It was after the festival that we started having problems with our record company. After releasing another CD single (Quando suono il piano – When I play the piano -) we had had a full record ready for a long time that due to a lack of promotion and some other problems with the company was never released.
This is why we came to the decision of interrupting our career as a trio band and each one of us has gone their own way.
It is now the year 2006…. And at long last my first album is released, it is called Un giorno perfetto – A perfect day – This CD is a faithful reflection of myself.
The eleven songs in the record represent my music roots: rock’ n’ roll, the Beatles, the well-known Italian composers, soul music, my way of playing the piano, Jerry Lee Lewis ’s way too, and my voice.
In March 2007 the songs “Chiama di Notte” (Call at Night) and “Licantropia” (Lycanthropy) are executed respectively by the competitors Giulia and Max during the broadcast named “Amici” (Friends) conducted by Maria de Filippi on the Italian Channel 5. Both tracks are then going to be included in the CD from the broadcast “Amici” entitled “Bianco e Blu” (Blue &White) – WEA 2007.
The collection by the song-writer Antonino called “Nero Indelebile” (Indelible Black) published in 2008 includes the track “U are not Satisfied” which I have written and composed together with Antonino himself.
On spring 2008 my new single called “Fili” (Wires) is finally published. This track is entirely played together with musicians belonging to MySpace and it is fabulously arranged and produced by Fabio Gargiulo .
Sono cresciuto a Spilamberto, tra l’aceto balsamico, il fantasma di Messer Filippo e il Magalasso.
Ho cominciato a studiare pianoforte classico dall’età di 7 anni, ma la mia insegnante non era molto soddisfatta di me perchè mi esercitavo più a suonare e cantare brani dei Beatles e di Elvis Presley (due passioni che porto con me tutt’ ora) piuttosto che fare gli esercizi al quanto noiosetti che mi obbligava a studiare. In quel periodo mi sono innamorato del Rock’n roll, e alla fine è rimasto l’unico genere musicale che mi diverte e mi fa sentire bene ancora oggi (sebbene io ascolti di tutto).
Nel 1986, con mio fratello Lor e alcuni amici di Spilamberto, ho formato i Tan Zero.Suonavamo un genere musicale tra la new wave e il progressive, con testi in lingua inglese. Sebbene fossimo poco più che ragazzini, nel 1987 una etichetta indipendente modenese ci nota e pubblica il nostro primo ed unico album: “We can’t imagine”. L’intero lavoro viene utilizzato dal regista romano Nico D’Alessandria come colonna sonora del suo film (ora a quanto mi dicono è un film-cult ) “L’imperatore di Roma”.
Nel 1991 entro a far parte della band di Francesco Baccini ,come tastierista-pianista, collaborazione che a fasi alterne si è protratta fino a oggi: con lui ho suonato in tour, e ho partecipato alle registrazioni degli album “Nudo”(1993), “La notte non dormo mai”(2002) “Stasera Teatro”(2005) e " Fra..gi..le" (2006).
Come tastierista ho suonato anche con i Rats, dove mio fratello Lor era batterista; anche con loro ho fatto vari tour e suonato nei dischi “Indiani Padani”(1991) e “La vertigine del mondo”(1995).
Nel 1997 sono entrato a far parte di un gruppo dal nome “Bambini in Bikini”, abbiamo pubblicato un cd singolo e abbiamo fatto qualche apparizione in tv al Roxy Bar di Red Ronnie.
Nel 2000, per 4 mesi, ho parteciato quotidianamente alla trasmissione “Uno mattina estate”, su Rai 1, come cantante e pianista del gruppo “I Lunadoro”.
Finita questa esperienza, troppo mattiniera, ho incominciato a pensare a mettere su un trio formato da pianoforte, basso e batteria.Dopo un po’ di tempo con Alex Class e Max Baldaccini sono nati gli “Allunati”.
Ci siamo iscritti all’Accademia di Sanremo con la canzone “Quando suono il piano” e, dopo tante fasi eliminatorie, siamo riusciti ad arrivare nel Marzo 2003 al 53° Festival di Sanremo, presentato da Pippo Baudo.
A Sanremo abbiamo cantato “Chiama di notte”, che ho scritto con Enrico Nascimbeni, e nonostante il piazzamento al tredicesimo posto, abbiamo avuto grandi soddisfazioni. Dopo il festival sono cominciati i problemi con l’etichetta discografica. Con l’uscita di un altro singolo (“Quando suono il piano”), la casa discografica non fa assolutamente promozione e l’album, che è già pronto da un pezzo, dopo varie vicissitudini legate a questo e ad altri problemi discografici, non viene pubblicato.
Così abbiamo deciso di fermarci, ed ognuno di noi ha intrapreso direzioni diverse. Nel 2006 esce il mio primo album: “Un giorno perfetto”.
Un album che mi rappresenta a 360°: nelle 11 canzoni del disco ci sono le mie radici musicali, il rock’n roll, i Beatles, i cantautori storici italiani, la musica soul, il mio pianismo alla “Jerry Lee Lewis” e la mia voce.
A Febbraio 2007 esce come nuovo singolo "L'istinto", sempre tratto dall' album "Un giorno Perfetto".
A Marzo 2007 "Chiama di notte" e " Licantropia", vengono eseguiti nella trasmissione "Amici" di Maria de Filippi (Canale 5), ripettivamente dai concorrenti Giulia e Max; tutti e due i brani verrano poi inclusi nel CD di Amici "Bianco e Blù" (WEA)2007.
L’ album di Antonino "Nero Indelebile", uscito nel gennaio 2008, contiene "U are not satisfied", una canzone che ho scritto con Antonino stesso.
Nella primavera 2008 esce il mio nuovo singolo “Fili”, interamente suonato con musicisti di MySpace e prodotto e arrangiato magistralmente da Fabio Gargiulo.
