HISTORY - THE FIRST 6 YEARS OF MEAN IDOLS
2000
Everything started somewhere in late 2000.
Original line up was
Vetsi (ex-Satellite Kids) on vocals,
Sorkku (ex-Mafia, ex-The Lovely Creeps etc.) on rhythm guitar,
Dimmu (Downfall) on bass,
Pave (ex-Fury Raven, ex-Two Witches) on drums and
Popo (ex-Voodoo Zoo, ex-Kuolleet Kukat) on lead guitar.
2001
Band started practising and making songs.
Not much happened at the early days.
Social Distortion -cover song 'Cold Feelings' and
Ramones -cover song 'I Can't Make It On Time' added to set.
One year later Dimmu was kicked out from the band
and after that he joined in Destination X.
2002
Sorkku changed from guitar to bass
and took Dimmu's place at early 2002.
Later Tinppa (ex-Frank's Ark, ex-Destination X etc.)
joined in Mean Idols as second guitar player.
Band went to studio for the first time in May.
All recorded four tracks later released on bands first 7"EP.
The first gig was at Klubi, Tampere at same times.
Mean Idols' website opened somewhere in June.
2003
Second studio session was in April 2003.
Epe Helenius,
the boss of legendary Finnish record company Poko Rekords,
gets interested in Mean Idols after listening the EP and 2nd demo.
After some negotiation at Poko Rekords office
there was nothing happened anyway.
In September Mean Idols played gigs with American rockers
Adam West in Finland.
Dave Champion was a guest vocalist when Mean Idols played
Dead Boys-classic 'Sonic Reducer' at Tampere gig.
First set of T-shirts and badges are pressed before the shows.
The Sultans Of Suomi SPLIT 7" single with The Trassels
was also out in September by Fandango Records (USA).
At late 2003 Pave hurt his back very badly.
It seems that he cannot continue playing anymore.
Ex-Burning Pipe Harmony -drummer Gregory
replaces Pave on the December tour with Rickshaw (Swe) & Bad Machine.
Soon after that tour Gregory joined the band as a full member.
(Pave had to quit playing drums until 2005 when his back got better
and he joined in Silene for playing Siouxie And The Banshees covers.)
2004
Third time in studio at May now the first time with Gregory.
Mean Idols/Null$katte$nylterne split 7" EP is out in July
by Woimasointu/Nosebleeder Records in Finland and Norway.
(Songs at split 7"are from second studio session in 2003)
Ramones cover song 'Poison Heart' added to live set.
Mean Idols' line-up changed
(fast and dramatically...) after the gig at Seinäjoki in September.
Popo was kicked out.
After getting rid of Popo band decided to continue as a four piece band.
Band touring in Russia with Tarakany! late September the same year.
Biggest show was in Luzhniki Small Sport Arena, Moscow
with legendary Misfits (USA).
Mean Idols played Tarakany! cover song 'Who And When'
with Tarakany!'s lead singer Dima on vocals at Russian shows.
Band has never played that song again after that tour.
After sitting in truck for over 3000 km, drinkin' gallons of Russian beer
and listening good music guys were tired but satisfied.
The tour was fine!
First Russian release Punk Rock High School Int. Compilation-CD
by FM Molchit Records is out at same time
including track 'Devilish Girl' from Mean Idols.
There was a 4-page article of Mean Idols' Russian tour
on ROCKMUSIC.RU issue 9 (15)/2004 (written in Russian).
Also Finnish punk magazine Toinen Vaihtoehto (10/2004)
contains a tour report (written in Finnish).
Fourth time in studio at November - now the first time as four piece band.
2005
Not much happened in 2005 because both Tinppa and Vetsi got babies.
Band touring in Finland with their Russian friends Tarakany!
in summer 2005.
Fifth studio session at September.
Crash Course From The Underground Compilation CD
by Woimasointu Records is out in September
Including track 'Go Mental!' from Mean Idols.
Mean Idols/Nullskattesnylterne split 7" EP reviewed by Jeff Dahl
in Carbon 14 25.
2006
Mean Idols have special guest vocalist Teemu from The Heartburns
at their gig atKouvola 18.2.
Together they done two Cleveland punkrock classics
'Sonic Reducer' from Dead Boys and
'What's This Shit Called Love?' from Pagans.
