Victor Pope was born in Middlesborough in the year of our lord 1976. A creative lad from the start he found his home with the other budding celebrities of the area being Bob Mortimer, Chris Rea, Paul Daniels and that bloke out of Whitesnake. However tragedy beset his little life at the tender age of 8 when his parent's split lead to a move to Kendal. A town with no celebrity residents and nicknamed the "grey town" because of how boring it was.
Unditered however he continued with his delusions of granduer until at 16 he found an outlet for his creative energies...Rock and roll! His first band, the Careful Movers became notorious around the Kendal live circuit for their drug fueled and chaotic performances that would often be remeniscent of early Fall gigs. But this couldn't last for ever and two years later, with half the band wisely leaving town, the band split. Leaving only Victor and his co conspiritor Dan Ramos to carry the torch.
It wasn't long, however, before they'd formed their second band, the slightly more sedate and trippy Spring Explosion. They took their inspiration as much from the buergoning trip hop scene as from the raw fairytail punk of the careful movers. With this band Victor found his feet as a producer and in the two years of their career he recorded two albums, although thier live apearences were few and far between and lacked much of the energy of the earlier work.
But in 1996 Victor finally got his ticket out of the "grey town" with a place at Barnsley college doing a pop music degree. Despite the slightly less encouraging nickname of the "black hole" Barnsley proved a hot bed of creative talent and he had soon formed his third band, Trip hop / funk outfit Vatican City Dub. During his four years at college the band only did a handful of gigs and an albums worth of material but had inspired Victor as a producer and songwriter to do what he had been planning for a long time...to go it alone. So in 1999 with the band split Victor recorded his first two solo albums, Harmless Psychotic and the experimental soundscape album Sounds of the Evil Ocean.
In 2000 college was over and it was time for Victor to face the big wide world. He did so by becoming a regular face on the Newark, Leicester and Matlock open mic circuit as well as playing solo at a number of festivals during the summers of 2000 and 2001 and recording the first couple of tracks for what would later become his album Saving the World. However, around the middle of 2002 it all went pear shaped...
Whilst living in Matlock and working part time at Gulliver's kingdom theme park he decided to smash up his guitar and promised never to play music again. This madness lasted for about two years until at the end of 2004 he wrote his first new song, 'give god a go', in over two years and the ball was rolling once more.
Since then he has finished recording his third, fourth and fitfh solo albums, as well as 2 pop videos and has moved to Leeds where he is once again a regular face on the open mic scene as well as playing the occasional festival. He is also thinking about setting up his own record company and has his own website at www.victorpope.co.uk where you can download Saving the World for free. So please, before he goes mad again, give Victor a listen and maybe he might win a place in your hearts...
Below you will see the videos for Victor Pope's cover of the classic Slick Rick tune "Treat her like a Prostitute" and his own composition, "L Ron Hubbard". I hope you enjoy them...
