" Arrrrrr!!! Pirate punks ahoy! This cleverly crafted beauty is well worth ya pieces of eight. It's a rollocking ride over the waves that's not just some one trick pony..they actually have some great songs too. Recommended (even to land-lubbers). "

“our very own Dirty Pirates, with their long delayed debut album (Cats Face Productions). They probably wouldn’t be so pretentious as to call themselves a ‘concept’ band, but that’s how I like to see them! Lyrics generally cover wine, women, bounty etc but there are also acute social references and political undercurrents running throughout. For this reason ‘Skeleton Crusade’ is a standout track for me, while ‘Get Onto The Bus’ is another favourite because its beautiful bass-led tones nicely break the flow of the full-on tracks, which do become a little samey over 10+ tracks. Sound wise, the guitars and drums have lots in common with Bleach-era Nirvana, but there’s also more of a stoner-rock wall of sound fatness to the overall production. Lacking finesse at times in the musicianship (probably intentionally), this is a goodtime record that rocks hard, from a band evidently having fun with their image and sonic identity. Seems representative of a gang mentality (as in a shared musical collective between friends, not inner city gun crime…) which endears them to me in this world of faceless computers and myspace. It’s nice to hear lots of people in a room making a creative racket, swapping vocal duties and crafting some mean songs in the process. They could have probably trimmed the album down by 2/3 tracks or shaved 30 seconds off some of the longer tracks to cater for first time listeners, but as it stands this is a very cohesive long player & difficult not to enjoy. Play loud! myspace.com/dirtypiratesrock"
- Disco Dave:
More cd's, compilations, dvds & EPs to follow in 2008!
Influences: Imagining social harmony but then just ending up pointing out harmful influences on society, dosing with a good deal of fun every weekend & some footy/futsal during the week, rounded off with a once monthly binge of writing & photoshop. Occasional recording of tunes, live jam, fucking drunk jam & the minor threat of bringing out a proper website / cd distribution paypal + some actual records....

Their first ever gig, you will never see anything so hard, excuse the 'thrash ending' for the March of The Christians featuring a ukulele, a drill & Cakemaker James, a bit of a joke tune about the deacceleration of human consciousness at the hands of neo-religious nut cases, before we're onto the main course of 1600bpm Grind with dainty delicious cakes! Mmmmmm!

We lost some footage of this onslaught, this performance features live cake making, not for the weary, weak willed or for those with fragile ear drums, or certain stupid american folk singers apparently either!

Despite a singer who is always slightly out of key, The Voices have a pleasant sound. Acoustic guitars and minimalist reverby tunes that sound a bit like The Coral in places, and have pots and pans style percussion that gives a subtle bounciness. Lyrics that sound suspiciously like sixth-form poetry, but as a whole this washes over my ear drums quite nicely. There's a bit of a false I'm-so-bohemian-it-hurts Pete Doherty vibe at times, but very good other than that. myspace.com/briggoandthevoicesRoyal Vendetta are a decent band, and getting on all the right live bills by the look of their gigs list. Hard to tell how much of the swagger/ arrogance is intentional bravado and how much they actually think they could rule the world (they won't). Their music is impressive however, and comparable to Kasabian, who are great. I wish they'd tone down the obvious laddish mood, because they can really play and don't need the negative connotations some listeners will attach to the 'we're just confident lads from down the road/pub who don't give a fook' attitude they imply. Nevertheless, some killer riffs (check out Too Many Wrongs in particular) and the kind of solid Northern sound that just can't be done right by wussy southerners with their cocktail bars and permed mini-mullets. myspace.com/royalvendetta
And now for something completely different...
The Gipton Removal Firm. Hip-hop that seems a bit low-budget at firsts, but is full of soul and humour in equal doses. Some decent beats and after a couple of listens you find yourself realising the MC is actually really good. Excellent "flow" as I believe the kids call it these days. The Streets would be an obvious comparison (probably the reason he name checks Mike Skinner in one of the tunes) but a track like Cigarette Encounter is gracious lo-fi art for the man on the street. myspace.com/thegiptonremovalfirm.---------------------------

DEMO POLICY
------------------------------
Just a shout to bands who wanna play the night, I'm a pretty busy chap generally it seems always & don't always get to check out bands through their myspace if I can't download the songs. It's easier if I get a demo on cd to listen to. If you're interested in playing a show or getting reviewed in our fanzine DROP ME A MESSAGE see about getting a demo sent. I then can pass it on to 'DISCO DAVE' who does demo reviews & checks out bands for me & reviews them in The Hyde park heat.
