About Me

I'm the author of five novels, published through WaterBrook Press (a division of Random House) and now through Thomas Nelson. My sixth will be out in early '08, and the Jerusalem's Undead Trilogy will kick off with FIELD OF BLOOD on 10/09/08...The countdown is on.When I walk in a room, I can't help but overhear conversations and pick up on others' moods. My heart beats for the downtrodden and the outcast. I love the fringes of society. Sometimes, I wish I could turn all this off in my head, so that I could numbly go through a day without getting burdened with others' concerns. Impossible.Which is why I write, I suppose. DARK TO MORTAL EYES ('04) and EXPIRATION DATE ('05) are the first two in a five-part suspense series. THE BEST OF EVIL ('06) and A SHRED OF TRUTH (July 17,'07) are the first in the Aramis Black Mystery Series. I've also been honored with the opportunity to do the novelizations of FACING THE GIANTS (October '07) and FLYWHEEL (April '08), from the grass-roots theatrical hits.I write novels that revolve around characters who struggle with life's questions. As a Christian who is sick of organized religion, I often wonder: If Jesus is the Answer, why are we so afraid of the questions?..

My Interests

I'm a big-time reader. I love the outdoors. I like playing a good game of jaw-smashing basketball. I'm an avid chess player. Most of all, I love to go on dates with my wife because we truly love, understand, and accept one another.

I'd like to meet:

If I could go back in time, I'd sit in at the Oxford pub where C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and other luminaries smoked pipes, drank ale, and discussed literature. I'd be a fly on the wall. I'd soak it all in, smiling at their brilliance and belligerence...Myspace Contact Tables

Music:

Most of the time, I'm listening to alternative and hard rock, everything from Audioslave, Flyleaf, Muse, Demon Hunter, and Evanescence, to As Cities Burn, Radiohead, Coldplay, As I Lay Dying, Switchfoot, and Underoath. My all-time favorite, for lyrics and longevity, is U2.

Movies:

My tastes range from The Shawshank Redemption, Match Point, Life is Beautiful, Se7en, and Crash, to Liar Liar, Fight Club, Unbreakable, Serendipity, Pieces of April, and Lord of the Rings. Netflix is my friend.

Television:

I rarely watch TV, but when I do it's sports (go Titans!), the mind-over-matter elements of Fear Factor, and the insane stupidity of Max X. Yeah, I'm pathetic.

Books:

I grew up reading C.S. Lewis, then Robert Ludlum and Alistair MacLean, John LeCarre, Graham Greene, Harper Lee, and Morris West. Nowadays, I read Daniel Silva, Dean Koontz, Harlan Coben, Ted Dekker, Melanie Wells, Chris Well, Brandt Dodson, Kathryn Mackel, James Lee Burke, and numerous others. Anne Lamott and Donald Miller hit the bull's-eye for me on the non-fiction end.

Heroes:

I've never been enamored with celebrity-types. My heroes mostly consist of those who labor for years with little reward, the behind-the-scenes types. I definitely admire David from the Bible, the way he was so freakin' honest with God.

God and Ultimate Fighting

I'm a fighter. I've wrestled with God over the years. Still do. I kick, question, and vent. Full of testosterone, I've always loved a challenge--from skis, to chess, to no-blood/no-foul basketball--a...

A Quick Dip

I often feel alone. I feel inadequate. Incomplete. Although these feelings can drag me down, it's good to remember they are accurate. Only God encapsulates all that makes us whole. He alone is holy. ...

Swallow and Shut Up

Censorship. It's all around us, ignoring the warnings of "Fahrenheit 451" and sucking the life from creativity and truth. Yes, I know: There are bad things on the internet. Yes, I know: People leave c...

The Undead

Dracula. The undead. Blood-sucking. Are they metaphors for evil? Are they childhood nightmares played out in adult novels? Should someone who loves fiction and also tries to follow the teachings of Je...
