Company D The Actor's Production Workshop: David Scott

About Me

What is Company D? Company D was created in 2006 when a group of students who had trained extensively with David Scott at the Gaiety School of Acting asked David to take them on a course that would give them production experience and a broader understanding of what it means to create theatre that challenges the actor, audience and the conventions of acting. Strictly speaking Company D is a production ‘course’, but more accurately, it is a kind of learning co-operative in which students receive the experience of working towards a production in which they are completely involved in the artistic decision making process. The students are never referred to as students in the course. They are the actors or the members of the Company and are required to conduct themselves as such. They are not treated as ‘hired talent’ who move where they’re told to move by an authoritarian director under a ‘star system’. They decide upon the Stage picture, the end result, and they understand how and why each movement and each word is expressed in the way it is. The work is intricate, detailed and often difficult. In this way, they own it and are responsible for it. The production is theirs. Company D is interested in the cutting edge of theatre practice. We learn about practitioners who have walked this edge; Grotowski, Suzuki, Decroux, Brecht and particularly Artaud. We look at the importance of playwrights like Howard Barker and Sarah Kane. We want to know what the theatre is, what the Stage is, why these were born in ancient Greece and around the tribal fire, what their functions are, what their roles are in the evolution of humanity and their potential for changing us and our world. David Scott is an actor, teacher, director and playwright. Other than his work with Company D, he teaches for The Gaiety School of Acting, Backstage Academy of the Performing Arts, The Irish Film Academy, Stagewise, Stageworks and the Drama League of Ireland.D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D D
