Don't Wine.......Drink it!!!!

The Wine Cellar in Salt Lake Magazine
When you've outgrown the see-and-be-seen impulses, it's tough to find a haunt that strikes a perfect balance between classy and comfortable. Too upscale, and you'll be bounced for wearing your favorite jeans; too relaxed and you risk devolving into a beer-soaked bar fly. The Wine Cellar, is located in the heart of Ogden's downtown, is one of those rate bars that hits the sweet spot between high and lowbrow.
Walking into this bar is like falling through the rabbit hole: enter an office building and walk down a long hall lit with fluorescents until you hear strains of jazz floating up a flight of stairs. Descend, and you'll think you've left Ogden and stepped into a Chicago or NOLA lounge. Exposed brick walls and dark wood paneling create a cozy atmosphere, and because wine is the focus here—hence the name—the decor follows an oenophilic palette of burgundy, claret and merlot.
Uh-Oh. Starting to sound a little too Frasier and not enough Cheers? Don't worry. The wine list is approachable, and not a snob in sight. Whether you are wearing black leather, or Friday casual, you'll feel cool here—the vibe is decidedly mellow. Of course, it helps this is a jazz bar; most nights, you can catch some live tunes, and every other Sunday, the joint opens up for a jam session—BYO instrument, of course.
Even if you're here just to chill, your covered. It's blessedly easy to get away from the music if you want to, though regular acts include the Porch Pounders and jazz legend Joe McQueen. The place is long and narrow, with the stage at one end and quiet seating at the other. If you are into jazz, pull up a chair-this is one of those few settings where sitting close won't deafen you—but if you want an intimate conversation, retreat to the back, where your tete-a-tete won't be overwhelmed by the bass.
That's right: a bar where you can hold a conversation. If that is a foreign concept, maybe you should stick to your house and dance parties. If it sounds like a welcome change, though, make the drive. You'll be welcome at The Wine Cellar anytime. Open Thursday-Saturday and every other Sunday.
