Dusty Springfield - the world's BEST singer!
Born on April 16th, 1939, Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien (a.k.a. Dusty Springfield ) has been acknowledged around the world as the best female soul singer that Britain ever produced. With her superbly erotic, breathy voice, she recorded huge string of hits from the 1960's onwards. Born in Hampstead to Irish parents, Dusty grew up in and around London. Her early work included an all girl trio, The Lana Sisters, and, then, with her brother Tom Springfield (Dion O'Brien), The Springfields. Inspired by Phil Spector's "wall of sound", Dusty recorded her first pop song "I Only Want to be with You" in 1963. It reached No. 4 in the charts and was the first song played on the new BBC TV pop show "Top of the Pops" (1964). The sixties brought an amazing succession of top ten hits and a high profile lifestyle to match. In 1969 Dusty recorded “Dusty In Memphisâ€. Although the single “Son of a Preacher Man†was a hit, the album did not sell well (although it is now regarded as a classic, priceless album). After “Dusty In Memphisâ€, Dusty had a few more record flops which led to addictions to drink and drugs for most of the latter seventies and early eighties. Proving her resilience and fighting spirit, Dusty collaborated with lifelong fans The Pet Shop Boys, came back with songs such as "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" and the album "Reputation". In one of life’s cruel twists of fate, in 1994 Dusty was diagnosed with breast cancer while recording what was to be her last album; “A Very Fine Loveâ€. While the album release was postponed, Dusty underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy and went into a period of remission. Unfortunately the cancer returned in 1997, and on the 2nd of March 1999, Dusty passed away in her home in Henley-On-Thames. She had very recently received her Order of the British Empire and ten days after her death, Dusty was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
