Music is the catalyst for all good friendships.

About Me

A Veteran Cosmic Rocker I guess ! I am a huge fan of "YES", "Rick Wakeman", "Pink Floyd", "Tom Petty" and the "Heartbreakers", "Rick Wright", "Fleetwood Mac", "Stevie Nicks", "Lindsey Buckingham", "Emerson Lake and Palmer", "Dave Gilmour", "Trevor Rabin", "The Traveling Wilbury's", "Manfred Mann's Earthband", "Isao Tomita", "Moody Blues","Roger Waters", "The Hellecasters", "Ray Davies", "Mike Pinder", "Tony Banks", "Genesis", "Justin Hayward", "Roger Hodgson", "Clifford T Ward", "Roy Phillips & The Peddlers"- the great 60/70's Jazz Trio, "Malcolm McLaren","Ian Neal" and many others listed on my page.

Do check out Ian Neal's "ALL IN THE GOLDEN AFTERNOON" album, you will be glad you did! This album has to be the best kept secret, it really is amazing.

In the early day's I grew up listening to "Elvis", "Bill Haley", "The Everly Brothers", Duane Eddy, Roy Orbison, "Eddie Cochran", "Del Shannon", "Gene Vincent", "Jerry Lee Lewis", "Buddy Holly" & "Lonnie Donegan". I listened avidly to "Radio Luxenbourg" every night.

I feel very fortunate to have been part of the 60's music explosion, especially the Beatles era. No-one who was there at the time could forget the days of Beatlemania and I don't think we shall ever see anything quite like it again.

I was into bands like "The Who"," The Kinks", "Spencer Davis","The Yardbirds", "Argent", "Jefferson Airplane","The Beatles", "The Shadows", "The Byrds" & "The Rolling Stones" who we would go and see at the "Crawdaddy club" in Richmond, my home town. The guitar legend, Chet Atkins, was also a huge influence.

At the end of the sixties I was introduced by a friend to the great jazz trio, "The Peddlers" who were really something very special back then, and from that, my music tastes widened to include Jazz. The 70's came and with it my favorite type of music, "Progressive Rock", with bands like "Emerson Lake & Palmer", "Yes", "Pink Floyd", "Genesis" etc. The synthesiser was also born, thanks to "Robert Moog", and my first taste of that was on the amazing "Six Wives of Henry VIII" album by "Rick Wakeman" who was to become my hero. " Keith Emerson was another huge influence on my musical taste, and ELP became another favorite band of mine.

I have a very broad taste in music as I came from a family of musicians and was introduced at an early age to Big Band music, "The Ted Heath Orchestra", "Glen Miller" etc were embedded in my mind and I still love that stuff today. Also, with my part Yorkshire roots, there is a love for Brass Band music, "The Grimethorpe Colliery Band" being my favorite, and probably the best there is, as witnessed in the film "Brassed Off"

I also like all types of classical music especially by "Claude Debussy" "Maurice Ravel" "Saint Saens" & "Erik Satie", and even some opera, in particular, "Puccini", so I enjoy almost anything if its good.

For film score composers, two that stand out for me, "John Barry" and "Trevor Rabin".

I have an "Out of Control" CD & Vinyl collection and I am rapidly running out of space !. I suppose this page is my kind of tribute to all the artistes mentioned on this page, for all the great pleasure their music & art has given me over the years.

It is not uncommon for my kids to shout at me to turn the music down ! Er ? Shouldn't that be the other way round ?.

IAN NEAL

Electronica, Prog Rock and Classical is a mixture of styles of music that you may not think, work together. How wrong can you be, and a very talented, Ian Neal, has proved just that with his debut album "All In A Golden Afternoon". Every once in a while an album is released that just blows you away with the first listen, this is no exception. Based on Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland" a combination of music and verse, it is a true masterpiece and if there's any justice in the world, it should be heard by the masses, it's up there with the best, there's no question about that.Three years in the making might seem a long time to produce an album but when you hear the quality and production that has gone into this project you will understand why it took so long and Ian will not accept second best, he is a perfectionist and it undoubtedly shows in his music. Ian's musical influences include, King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd and Barclay James Harvest amongst others and listening to this album, you can hear likenesses to these bands work somewhere along the way.Other recent works of Ian's include an EP called "The Lake", a thirteen minute track inspired by the 1769 lakeland poet "Thomas Gray" and which has now just been re-worked to be a fully instrumental piece. Also, world war one poet "Rupert Brooke" inspired Ian to create "Sonnet V" a.k.a., "The Soldier". A beautifully haunting four minute piece that really works well and one is left wishing that it would continue for much longer, it's that good!Surely it is only a matter of time before Ian is signed up and I sincerely hope he gets the recognition he so richly deserves. Do take the time to check out his music, as it really is special.

Marty Smyth

Following the success of his first solo pipe organ CD, 'Danse Macabre', in March 2007 Marty transcribed and recorded another eclectic set of pieces on 'Synchronous'. While Ravel's Bolero picked up where the previous recording left off, 'Synchronous' moves into the realm of 20 and 21st century rock and pop music. The disc features drummer Eric Morin, harpist Kristen Theriault, and violinist Daniel Kushner. On vocals for three of the tracks is folk/rock artist Andrea Wappel. The final track, written by Marty, is a funk tune that features electronic musician/arranger A.M.
