Isle of Thieves is a blend of energetic rhythm, textural riffs, driving power chords, memorable synth leads, and vocal melodies that are no less than infectious. Though comprised of musicians with different tastes, these ambitious newcomers have one objective; to create good, current rock music that isn’t dependent on fleeting scenes or allegiances to exclusive genres.
After several failed musical projects, Japeth (vocals/guitar) chose to reside in downtown Toronto in search of musicians in 2004. A year later, he met Matt Coatsworth (drums) while working at a hardware store. Japeth’s collaborations with Matt grew to include keyboardist, Justin Kwan. After some member changes and a brief hiatus, Isle of Thieves formed as the 5-piece it is today in the spring of 2006 with the additions of lead guitarist, Mike Marsh and bassist, Charles Canovas.
The band hooked up with Producer/Engineer Mike Langford (Evans Blue, Vaeda, Rains, Slowking, and Sunlit Ambush) in the summer of 2006 to record a demo at The Pocket Studios. However, the band and Mike developed a working relationship and began recording a full-length album which was eventually mastered by Joao Carvalho (Billy Talent, Sam Roberts, Alexisonfire, Nickelback, etc).
In January of 2008, Isle of Thieves completed their debut album entitled ‘Only Human’. The album is built upon paradoxical forces, exhibiting the delicate balance between innovation and familiarity, youthful energy and lyrical maturity. It buries itself in themes that range from angst-driven alienation to reflective observations of living within an existentialist and consumerist reality. These themes are, at times, approached with a sardonic and hostile demeanor, while at other times explored with such honestly, tenderness, and empathy. The album is a lamentation, a celebration, a bitter-sweet reminder, that we are all, only human.
Isle of Thieves continues to build momentum, establishing a following of dedicated fans in the Toronto area. They have performed in venues such as the Opera House, The Horseshoe Tavern, Lee’s Palace, The Reverb, Jeff Healey’s Roadhouse, and The Kathedral. The band persistently searches for their place in the world of music, looking towards the future with eager eyes, ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of them.
