MUSIC JOURNEY...My music dream began at the age of seven, I would become very attracted to popular music on the radio, I'd hear "The Beatles" and "Johnny Cash" and try to play their songs on my dads guitar, I had no idea what I was doing and sounded like crap with an out of tune guitar but I never gave up, my mother like all mothers tried to get me out from behind the sofa to perform for other folks, I'd let out a couple of peeps but I was to shy.My journey through my early music years would lead me to band class in high school down in Windsor Ontario, but lets start with band class in grade 8 in Kingston Ontario, well I wanted to play drums but all that was left was the trombone, I think my lips were to big because I really could not get that thing to work, I'm sure I just clowned around trying to hit someone in the back of the head with the slide, any hoo I did get to take the snare drum home from school for the weekend only to drive my family crazy with all the noise, there was something about drums that I loved.I was working 2 to 3 paper routes, cutting grass and taking garbage out from the ages 12 to 14, I was trying to save money to buy this beautiful double bass drum set downtown at the music store, it turned out that I was not making the payments fast enough so the store owner broke my heart telling me he sold the drums, my family was not rich so I went without.
My fourteenth birthday came and I got my first set of drum sticks and a practice pad, at this point I'm listening to groups like "KISS", "Leo Sayer", "B.T.O", "C.C.R", "The Bee Gees", "KC and the Sunshine Band" and so many more, I'd call my friends over to watch me play along to the songs on my pillow drum set layed out on my bed, this way I got the practice I needed, I had a fan base and my parents were not screaming about the noise. Now my life took a little turn and lead me to a Rock 'n' Roll drumming dream at the age of fourteen when I went to live with my mother in Windsor Ontario, during the summer of 1977 I had Detroit right next door blasting out radio songs by bands like, "Ted Nugent" "Deep Purple", "Eddie Money" "Bob Seger", who could forget "The Cars" and a great song called "Hot Child In The City" by "Nick Gilder".
Well I got my act together in high school and joined the music class, I played drums on a full size kit for the first time, it was a small 5 piece with cymbals, the teacher did not like when I'd play a beat that was not part of the song, he gave me a decent mark but when the school had an event going on, he'd ask another drummer to fill in, that was ok, I was not up to par yet.During this time my friends and I would start going out to see bands play and I'd enjoy watching the drummers do their thing, I would learn how to play drums this way, I was really hooked at this point to become a drummer so me and two friends tried to get a band going playing "AC-DC", "Jimmy Hendrix" and other groups but that did not last, still I was determined to make a go at a drumming music career.School ended for the summer in 1981 and I ended up moving up north to Ignace Ontario where I got a job working for the Canadian Pacific Railway, after a year and a half of saving money I bought my first "Tama" drum set, it cost me $8,500.00 dollars, I quit that job in 1983 to move back home to Kingston and start a band with my older brother Brian, we lived in a Motel with dancers, that was a hoot.
My brother and I moved into a house to start this band but that did not go so well so I rented some space and went to town playing catch up on my drumming chops, after that I got a small group together and we played at an out door music festival, they were not serious enough, so I decided to go back to Windsor Ontario in 1984.
Upon finding a place to live I read an ad in the paper looking for a drummer so I went down there and hooked up with these guys, we had to move to Simcoe Ontario to pick up the singer and then it was off to London Ontario to live with the singers sister and get some songs down, well we got a manager and played one show, the booking agent said the music we played was to heavy and it would be hard for us to get work, so after all that practicing and putting 3 sets together, the other boys gave up and went back to Windsor.
I stayed in London and moved on to a room in the basement of a house in 1985 and spent a year and a half practicing my drumming skill's for 8 to18 hours a day, from 5am until 11pm, I got started so late as a drummer my determination was intense to become one of the worlds best rock drummers, I achieved that goal and went on to play drums for many great bands in London Ontario, we played nothing but rock songs and originals, we put out tapes and videos, we toured and played the bar scene from Toronto to London to Windsor Ontario and all the little towns inbetween, I stopped playing professional drums in 1992.Now in 1993 I was looking for a new challenge in music so I bought myself a guitar, some books and started a journey to become a singer/songwriter and musician, I learned alot about writing songs with all the groups I was in but I needed to advance my skill's in this area., 6 years would pass by and it became time to showcase my music, so out I went for four years playing open stages in the London and Toronto Ontario areas, selling my CDs , tapes and videos, having loads of fun.It was 2003 and I thought with all the music attention Kingston Ontario was getting I would move back there to my home town, so Christmas came and I did the family thing with my brother Brian and his family, then it was back off into the unknown down the highway on a Greyhound bus, all for the love of music.I arrived in 'Kingston Ontario Canada' January 2004. I began writing on a steady basis. By November 2007 I had completed 174 songs and 3 instrumentals. I was planning to release 15 CDs with this new material but decided to choose the top 35 songs and release them on mp3 and a double CD pack... Titled "Joanna"....You can read the 15 CDs list, read the 174 lyrics list and read the top 35 songs list, in my blog: ...174 LOVE LYRICS... ...By:RICK AMEY...
