Formed in 1989 under the name Ker Plunk, 1/2 of Star Search winners THE KINGPINS, merged with punk pioneers RIBZY to form a experimental punk band with a swingin' psycho rock flavor. After a successful stint on 819 records and dozens of gigs with such notables as SHADOWY MEN ON A SHADOWY PLANET,THE DWARVES, THE DIESAL QUEENS, THE JESUS LIZARD, MDC etc... Ker Plunk disbanded in 1994 while Greg moved around the country. The band reformed in 1999, under the name The What 4. The name was changed because of the growing popularity of Green Day was making some think they took the name Ker Plunk from Green Day's second album, which came 3 years after Ker Plunk started playing the Bay Area. With appearances on several comps and dozens of gigs under their belt, the name was again changed, after finding the name The What Four to be used by several others around the globe. Introduced as CARNAL ASADA by their pal ROCKIN' ROB DEPELLO (brother of long time friend LARS FREDRICKSON) for one gig at a nude beach before his premature departure from this club called EARTH, they settled on the name THE QUIRKS, after a review of The What Four in ZERO MAGAZINE called founding member Greg the "quirkiest of the bunch". After playing several gigs in the San Jose/Santa Cruz area, and releasing a full length CD avail in stores and on line, they received a cease and desist order from a lame band in Hollywood, called the Quirks, a band who lists Green Day as an influence (how lame is that)? The Quirks of Hollywood, who were anything but quirky and whose CD wasn't out yet, had legal claim to the name. The not lame Quirks were going to fight it, but then through the miracle of the growing Internet they found several other Quirks, including a side project of Grateful Dead members, and another one managed by Adam West of Batman Fame in the 60's. Thanks to a suggestion from their pal RIKK AGNEW (Adolescents, Christian Death, 45 Grave etc) they changed the spelling at least 15% to meet legal requirements and proudly announce that they are THE QUIRX, for now anyway.
