About Me
Musician, Composer, Vocalist and Speaker, ALL IN ONE, Nona Brown! Born the seventh child of eight, Nona’s musical gift was surprising to her parents who weren’t able to trace her God given talent. At the age of twelve, by divine inspiration, Nona’s pastor at the church she grew up in prayed for her hands and declared that she would play. Shortly thereafter her gifts began to unfold. By her teenage years she was playing organ and directing the choir for her church.Although Nona grew up in church she recalls having a fascination with the sound of jazz. One afternoon while playing the keyboard that her father had purchased for her, she wondered what it would sound like if she played a bossa nova feel while singing the hymn “Oh I Want to See Himâ€. That experiment was the genesis of Nona’s expression in penning words of life on the wings of melody.Never really considering herself to be a soloist, in the early 90’s Nona formed her own group, “Living Exampleâ€. Singing all original music composed by Nona, their sound was unique & versatile. The group was invited to appear on Bobby Jones Gospel. Their performance of “Sweeter†continues to be aired today on Bobby Jones Gospel “Classicsâ€.Nona began to expand her territory and in 1993 her composition,†I Know God Can Do Everything†was recorded by the Edwin Hawkins Music and Arts Seminar featuring Lashun Pace as guest soloist. Stepping out a little further, in 1997 she recorded her debut CD entitled, “I’ll Sing My Song†with much acclaim. Her talent has led her to many places and through many doors. In 2005 she sang at Oprah Winfrey’s Legends Ball, she has toured with Bishop Walter Hawkins; was a guest vocalist at the Walt Disney World Black Heritage Celebration and the Carnival “Gospel†Sea Cruise. She was also a composer and guest vocalist on the 2005 Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) “Live in Milwaukee†National Recording. A background vocalist extraordinaire, she has sung for Daryl Coley, BeBe Winans, Patti Labelle, Edwin Hawkins, Josh Groban, Lenny Williams and many others.Recently, Nona has partnered with World Vision, the largest Christian relief and development organization dedicated to helping children and their communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty. Nona joins artists such as Donald Lawrence, CeCe Winans, Donnie McClukin, Fred Hammond and others who are dedicated to helping these children.Nona has a new single entitled, “Woman Phenomenalâ€, an inspirational song dedicated to women, a must hear! “Initially, I had no idea that the song was more than just a “song†says Nonaâ€. After accepting an invitation (out of the blue) to speak to a group of woman at a conference, the Lord gave her a powerful message (centered around the song) that speaks to women in a personal and real way. Through that experience Nona realized that “Woman Phenomenal†was more about a much-needed ministry of encouragement and healing to broken and hurting women. This single is only available with your sponsorship of a World Vision child.Nona continues to motivate, inspire and encourage audiences around the country. She believes that keeping God first and never losing focus of your purpose will take you places that you’ve never imagined. Currently, Nona is a member of Love Center Church in Oakland, CA where Bishop Walter Hawkins is Pastor. She serves as a Praise & Worship Leader and young adult mentor. Nona is the proud mother of two, grandmother of one and Godmother of many!
