There are many rumours concerning the origin of the Venton Gimps and what follows is one of those many.
Way back in the mid ‘70s, an entrepreneur, with the given name of Venton Gimp but known by the industry as ‘The Captain’, had an idea to cash in on the emerging punk scene. At the time, all interest was centred on London but the Captain chose to invest his capital elsewhere; Cornwall, in fact. Safely tucked away in the West Country, his project was protected from the prying eyes of the media who notoriously never search out a story if it involves more than one change of tube. His first recruit was his nephew, Ax who was still perfecting his art so the Captain decided to speed things along a little and bought him a guitar. Other guitarists have claimed the ability to make their instrument speak or even sing but Ax soon learnt to make his sick. Ax was soon joined by his identical twin, Holler who took on the role of lead vocalist with almost enough enthusiasm to make up for his lack of ability; but not quite. The duo swiftly became a trio with the addition of cousin Rumble on bass and collections of notes roughly resembling songs were formed. Things were looking good and the newly christened ‘Venton’s Puppets’ were on the verge of achieving almost cult status when the Captain went missing. He was gone for 30 years and came back with a drum machine.Wallop joined as drummer because the other three had problems with a machine that never paid for a round. The quartet also found the name ‘Puppets’ a bit demeaning so they became The Venton Gimps. The rest, as they say, is history; or it will be when it’s in the past.
