Reviews for 'Bombing The Underground' 2007
From ManchesterMusic.co.uk
"The Terrorists choose their basic thrust on a range of ideas borne out of sensationalism - Complete with London Underground styled logos, this may cause concern in some quarters as to whether their message justifies the use of such attention grabbing logos and words - but the songs themselves seem to be full of stuff that’s more about shouting from the terraces as opposed to anything relevant to the complex affairs of both domestic and world order. Musically “Turn & Run” is a pretty decent bout of semi-ska, sax and smoothly flowing, roughly hewn melodies - although ever present heavy northern accents seem to be included, maybe because they have to be these days. “Wrong Eyes” is all of this stuck onto a baggy outlook and various emphasised vocal drawls. “Something To Do” is brimming with pissed-up rhetoric and a slurred delivery that makes Sham 69 sounds like The Strokes. It’s confounding because it’s pretty original, but looking for something deeper in all of this is a bit of struggle - a bucketful of potential remains however, as Terrorists are far from a conventional band."

"We Do Not Negotiate With Terrorists also knock around Gothenburg. Frontman Ross Downing growing-up in Manchester has made its mark on the music. It smells of The Clash, but lies close to Television Personalities' lazy, punky pop. Occassionally a brass instrument turns up. Opener Turn Run is brilliant. The music is in a way a little drowsy, but in a good way. Surprises can be heard every every corner. For example, the chorus from You Can't Hurry Love turns up in The Boy with the Wrong Eyes. It's quite simply bloody charming!"
Gothenburg Post, Saturday, 1st September 2007.
"Ross Downing grew up in Manchester and everyone who is even a little bit interested in rock history knows what that city has had to offer. It must be a great feeling to stand in a rehearsal room and just feel that you belong. Ross's band We Do Not Negotiate With Terrorists sounds pretty much incredibly British and for those that like to name-drop (and we do...) there are unending references. Clash, Specials, 70s Britpunk but also new stuff like the Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian. Most of all the band has a feeling of the Stone Roses on laughing gas with a totally speeding Ian Brown on the mic. We Do Not Negotiate With Terrorists hold a much higer tempo than the Stone Roses ever did, but they still have that really cocky and slurred delivery. It is also this that makes me actually like what they do. They are confident that what they do, they do it best that they can't even be bothered lifting their middle-finger to the masses. That's exactly how Turn & Run and Wrong Eyes sounds. Maybe the fact that their compositions are not the best in the world and are a bit rough at the edges is very to forgive." By Daniel Claesson
