New EP out now!

About Me

Finnish tango with one foot in the American traditional folk music and the other foot in the melodic pop rock scene.
That’s only one attempt to describe the music of Surunmaa.
Surunmaas founder Viktor Fors Mäntyranta grew up in northern Sweden but is now living in the city of Gothenburg. Well known for its music scene Gothenburg seemed like the perfect place to settle down. Here he met his good friends and musical colleagues that together gave shape to Surunmaa.
The band gets their musical and spiritual inspiration from the Torne River valley, the woodland located between northern Sweden and Finland. The area is well known for its old haunting folksongs.
The minor notes of the accordion meets the banjo picking from the American south, the firm pulse of the bass meets the melodies of eastern Europe. Tradition meets chaos. Each member adding his or her personal flavour creating a sound you’ll hardly forget.
The name is Finnish and means land of sorrow and even though most songs are in English the soul of Finnish tango is always there.
Politics, religion and love all gathered under the same name: Surunmaa
