“If you can’t dance to God Made Me Funky, you can’t dance.†- ChartAttack.com
Toronto based God Made Me Funky (GMMF) is a funky live ensemble, comprised of a diverse array of musicians ranging from a classically trained Jazz artist to street schooled Hip-Hop and R&B vocalists. With a common bond of moving crowds with their infectious energy, the band consists of Vocalists - Kaybe (Snow, Just Cool) and Lynzie Kent, Rapper - PHATT al (Len, Raggadeath), Keys - Danny Argyle, Bass - Cam Dougall (Graph Nobel, King Latifah), Guitar - Rich Grossman (Jimmy's Groove), Trumpet - Benji Perosin (Directions), Sax - Arthur Kerekes (Monkey), and Drums - Alan Witz (Funky Hi-Life, Millhouse), who all share the passion of bringing the “Nu-Funk†sound into the next millennium.
Formed in 1996, GMMF started out as an instrumental funk fusion experiment. As the bands popularity grew, vocalists were added to increase the range of songs the band could cover. Influences including Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Sly and the Family Stone, Michael Jackson, Jamiroquai, the Roots, Afrika Bambatta, and D'Angelo were remixed with a 'new school' sound, defining the bands unique style.
The band won the Toronto Independent Music Award for Best R&B Band, the first of many accolades and achievements, for their self-titled debut album released in 2005. In addition, they were named one of top performers at NXNE by ChartAttack.com that same year. Since 2005, their music has been chosen by the Parmelat Group (of Dairy Products) to be featured in their national "Pure Filter Milk" campaign and has been featured on the TMN hit show 'G-Spot'. Continuing their success, the band has shared the stage with such notable artists as Guru (GangStarr, Jazzmatazz), Afrika Bambatta, Julie McKnight, Bedouin Soundclash, and Divine Brown.
Their second album, ‘We Can All Be Free' featured guest spots from Michie Mee, Maestro, and Thrust; and featuring production by BEAT MERGERS Productions ( King Latifah ). The first single “Won More Time†feat. Thrust, hit 1 on CBC's R-30 radio charts, and 60 on the national CHR (Contemporary Hit Radio) charts. The song received heavy rotation on MuchVibe, and medium rotation on MuchMusic and Razer. The third single “Luv T'Day†was featured in the film ‘American Pie Presents: Beta House’. And has been honoured with a 2008 Juno nomination for R&B/ Soul Recording of the Year.
The band will further develop the Nu-Funk movement with the release of their third album ‘Enter The Beat‘, which hits streets on March 11, 2008. An eclectic mix of old school hip-hop with a new school twist; funk, rap, rock, and R&B come together to produce the band’s “NuFunk†genre. The first single, the album titled “Enter The Beat†, is currently being featured in the new Coors Light media campaign, while the latest single, "Bringin' It Back", has currently been serviced to radio nation wide.
