Sloth Brain

About Me

Sloth Brain has been stealthily creating visions of and for the world in an electronic mode since early 1996. The music of sloth is built upon the fundamental notion of improvisational sound sculpting with whatever is at hand. Most recently a ukelele has added a new dimension. In November '96 we performed at Modern Fuel Gallery in Kingston Ontario (http://www.modernfuel.org/) for the opening of an exhibition titled 'Soft Copy/Hard Copy' featuring works by Ian Carr-Harris, Robin Kingsburgh, Rebeccah Fahrig, Sasha Lee, Digital Soup and ten-to-the-x. In September 2003 we played the launch party for a collaborative project called 'The New Icon', initiated by CG artist and electronic musician Aleks Berland-aka Karmakat (http://karmakat.ca/karmakat-the-music). Sloth Brain performed for Nuit Blanche 2009 in Toronto. We presented an improvised series called 'Phases of Venus'. Over 2700 people visited the venue.______________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ ___ The gathering of field recordings continues, such as those utilized in 'Hartebeesthoek' and 'Alpen Gnome'. The video 'I Love You Smoothie' is an artifact of observing the city of Toronto at night. 'Silverhawk' is a requiem of sorts for the Jamaican sound system by the same name that went down to defeat at an infamous sound clash by the hands of the powerful and historic Killamanjaro. Check out UK Cup Clash 2008 for info on the crew: http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/ukcupclash08/ . 'Saltatio Astronomica' is a 'commissioned' short suite of music for a dance performance. Looking ahead, we will be offering you ever more surprising hits to occupy your pets while you're out shopping. ..

Influences: the tension between Ptolemy and Copernicus, the seminal Negativeland trauma, pies, the electro-magnetic bubble and squeak of Plunderphonic structural spatiality, post Pre-Raphaelite environmental pedagogy and the situationist statement on proper diet, the Novel Cafe in Santa Monica CA and the Beehive Coffeehouse in Pittsburgh PA, the laws of Lomax and Truax, the moogist tendencies of previously unknown electronic versions of the Sundiata epic and the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, the evolutionary struggle for the right to party, ackee and saltfish, the Krell, the whizz bang (as a precursor to fizzing whizbees) and its effects in consideration of other unlikely confluences, tonal issues arising from the archaeology versus treasure hunting debate, the encroachment of the glottal stop, the birds and synesthesia of Messiaen, that impenetrably dense and deceptive essay which accompanied Metal Machine Music, a belief that time travel is uncomfortable as hinted at by Darko and possibly Adams, Wells and Hawking, chronic tinitus, Kreskin's handshake, Lake Mungo man's ochre and the elusive Roman babies of Barcombe, the Hitchens Needs a Hug Society, detection of dark matter with swizzle sticks and mai tai umbrellas, urban landscape as readable text, a nice chip and whine, the quiet advance of Bonpo and its influence on the mod scooter, endlessly stunning fascination with the Sterkfontein orchestra, and the confusing revolutionary power of the United International Federated Union of Solipsistic Brothers and Sisters of Mind, etc...
