2008 has been a whirlwind year for Lynzie Kent—From a Juno nomination to the release of her first original album, this young performer is working her way towards the top…Born and raised in Guelph, Ontario, Lynzie spent her childhood surrounded by music. Her father managed and was the lead guitarist of the successful rock band Double Exposure while her mother was the lead singer. At a young age, she began performing with the band at some of Muskoka’s most prestigious resorts, corporate events, and Ontario’s most popular casinos.Inspired by her father’s songwriting, Lynzie began writing her own music at the age of 18 and at 22, has released her first original album entitled “Find the Wordsâ€. Her writing style is inspired by artists such as Heart, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morrisette, and Jann Arden. The lyrics and stories of her songs are personal and honest depicting situations that many young women encounter. Most songs are written collaboratively with her father—a great advantage to the young singer as he is a seasoned singer/songwriter. Lynzie’s relationship with him is best described in her song Daddy--a heart felt tribute to his dedication to music and family. From break-ups, to first loves, to the need for change, “Find the Words†is an album diverse in lyrics and style.Lynzie is currently the lead singer of Juno-nominated (Best R&B/Soul Recording of the Year) Toronto nu-funk band God Made Me Funky. Snagging this gig in early 2007 has led to non-stop nation wide touring. In 2007, God Made Me Funky headlined at The Montreal International Jazz Festival and The Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredericton. They were also the featured band in “American Pie Presents Beta House†receiving film time and song placements. Their songs have been featured in Degrassi: The Next Generation, Surviving My Mother (feature film), and the Coors Light Ad Campaign. In March 2008, God Made Me Funky released its third album “Enter the Beat†to a packed crowd at The Opera House and a fourth album is currently in the works. In 2008 alone, Lynzie has appeared on Breakfast Television (Toronto and Calgary), Etalk, and Entertainment Tonight Canada. Stand out performances of 2008 include NXNE Music Festival, The Montreal Jazz Festival, Opening for Afrika Bambatta, and Sick Kids Herbie Day.Lynzie does not stop her love for performing here. In 2003, Lynzie recorded a Christmas CD entitled “Home for Christmasâ€. The independently produced CD benefited the Guelph Wish Fund for Children and sold over 1200 copies. She was previously part of Toronto’s The Dance Company acting as a dancer and the company’s lead singer, contributing to the company receiving the Canadian Event Industry award for Entertainer of the Year. In December 2006 she graduated from Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts, Triple Threat College program. She has played leads in Oklahoma, Fame, The Laramie Project, and Is There Life After High School working with Jim Warren of Soulpepper and Steve Hunter of CanStage. She has also studied with renowned vocal coach Elaine Overholt and respected music director Jeffrey Huard.Lynzie’s other interests include fashion, languages, and travel. Her future goals include working in London’s West End, traveling the world, and, most importantly, becoming an influential Canadian singer/songwriter.
