My Interests

Raul's was a legendary punk rock club of the smallest sort in Austin Texas. It was the birthplace of the seminal bands The Big Boys, The Dicks, The Huns, and MDC , and midwife to The Butthole Surfers.Austin music critic Margaret Moser said it better than I ever could:"Raul's never intended to be a punk palace; mgr. Joseph Gonzalez hoped to mix a little tex-mex music with the rock and roll planned for the newly opened bar in '78. Within six months, the little club west of the University of Texas had a reputation as the focal point for New Wave Music in Austin, and the atmosphere being created was so vibrant and productive, even Patti Smith and Elvis Costello were prompted to make unexpected appearances (both with the Skunks, incidentally)Word got out that Raul's was the southwest's most active new wave scene and was sought out by visitors like Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, and Deborah Harry as well as members of the Dictators and John Cale's band. None of this is important, because nothing lasts forever, especially the many futures of rock. New Wave has been everything from the british invasion to the tres punk Sex Pistols to to Devo's neo-scientific techno-rock and the B-52's early 60's stylings. Intangible and non-linear as the term New Wave is, it can be applied to any group whose music consciously rejects the predictable patterns of 70's rock. I'd like to meet:

Anyone who ever played, danced, drank, got 86'd, or puked at Raul's Club, Austin Texas, 1978-1981. Or anyone who knows enough about music to know it was inarguably one of the best music venues in the U.S. I just love this slide show.

Movies:

The Huns , 1979, Live at Raul's Club American Hardcore Trailer (Note :This trailer ORIGINALLY began and ended with 2 killer songs from the Austin scene, "Dicks Hate Police" by The Dicks, and "Monotony", by the Next.As soon as I commented to the American Hardcore site that I hoped appropriate credit was given to the Austin scene, (which was NOT posted) the trailer on youtube was EDITED, obviously because the film did not obtain permission from the bands, one of whom at least knew NOTHING about it being used.
