Somewhere south of Motown, west of Scofield, east of Hendrix, and north of Lynyrd Skynyrd lives the Spirit Jazz Project. Their latest CD release is called Square Peg. The group is developing a new musical style called Blue Collar Jazz. It's bebop with a blue collar. The group is faithful to what "jazz" is supposed to be: modern music that is made by taking familiar sounds and making them swing like mad!
This music is Postmodern Fusion! SJP is a progressive trio focused on connecting with listeners through elements of rock distortion, blues guitar riffs, gospel style, soul melodies, and even country twang. Spirit Jazz have devoted themselves to the Pittsburgh tradition of being truly innovative; this music is one step toward the future of fusion.
The songs are spiritual, highly original, and nothing like them exists anywhere. All of the compositions are proudly hand crafted; it's American music. Many reflect on Biblical references, and everyday life. The tracks were recorded LIVE, with some later additions for flavor. All members of the group are educated musicians that have learned the most valuable lesson: Make REAL music for REAL people!
