About Me

Life. Love. Music personified. That is the definition that is L!SSEN. It was September 1992 when seven talented musicians started putting vocals to their already accomplished instrumental abilities. Inspired by and cut from the same mold as The Temptations and Boyz II Men, Smoove N Subtle, as they were initially called, tried to blend style with tight and flawless harmonies. All the members including original members Michael Thompson, and Samson Dixon were instrumentalists in the Eastern Senior High School Band, one of the most renowned marching bands on the east coast directed by Anthony Boyd and famous saxophone player Jaques Johnson.October 1994 came to be the most trying time in their short careers. Original member Edward McQueen was killed in a motor vehicle accident. It was a definite bookmark in the groups existence because it was Edwards death that motivated the group to succeed even more. Smoove N Subtle was no longer big enough for what these young artists had in store so after long deliberations about a name change, Michael Thompson came up with a one word answer: L!SSEN. Where the name says it all: ignore what you see. Whether its suits one day, or army fatigues the other, the only thing that should be of paramount concern is the music...so just L!SSEN.Turning Point was the debut album by L!SSEN that released with local acclaim in 2000. The entire album was written, arranged, and produced by members Michael Thompson, Samson Dixon, and Frank Marshall. While receiving local recognition and attention, L!SSEN was still longing for that missing ingredient. That one thing that could help catapult them to that next plateau of performance and national perception. While constantly attending concert after concert of Earth, Wind, & Fire, The Mighty OJays, The Isley Brothers, Mint Condition, and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, it became all too clear what that missing ingredient was: a band. Not just any band, but a band full of the best musicians the city of Washington DC had to offer. The band was assembled in 2001 they hit ground running. In less than two years, theyve become the band to see not only in this city, but up and down the east coast.
