Mal is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and songwriter with over 15 years experience working on many diverse musical projects including his own solo singer-songwriter work; being a member of world music band, Praying for the Rain; and accompanying a number of other successful artists and bands both on stage and in the studio.
A deep love of music and the desire to connect with other musicians has seen Mal travel the world singing, playing guitars and basses, mandolins, kalimbas and bodhran.
As a solo singer-songwriter, Mal has been writing and performing since 1993. Inspired by legends such as Roy Harper, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, he has developed a dynamic yet honest approach to music, which effectively combines grounded lyrics and melodies with a unique and intricate acoustic guitar style.
Mal has performed as a solo artist at many London and UK venues. He has also toured Italy twice; the first time he was invited to play a Nick Drake tribute tour, after performing numerous tributes in London and the UK, which also resulted in an appearance in the BBC2 documentary, A Stranger Among Us – In Search of Nick Drake. After this, Mal was invited to Italy as part of The Playpen Tour, performing alongside Kathryn Williams, Liz Simcock and Jont. More recently, Mal has performed in Toronto, Canada.
In 2000, Mal produced and released the Northern Calling EP, which showcases his innovative song writing and guitar playing. After six busy years writing and recording with other artists, he is currently in the process of recording a new body of solo work which is due for release in 2007. Mal continues to perform solo and is often accompanied by rock violinist Anna Phoebe.
