The Mavrix

Can you hear the ghosts?

About Me

The Mavrix is a South African band that was formed about twenty years ago by composers,Jeremy Karodia and Ayub Mayet. The two came together as political activists in the era of apartheid, writing songs about the inhumanity of racism, poverty and exploitation.Their music was a reflection of a South African society that lived in fear of itself. The duo mainly performed their music at political rallies and cultural events. After 1994,with the demise of apartheid, the group began to evolve.Their music covered broader world issues such as war, globalisation, domestic violence etc.Shahzaadee Karodia on violin,Reshma Lalla on santoor and Ketan Parshotam on tabla joined The Mavrix in 2003.This allowed the band to explore new musical boundaries. The band recorded and released their first cd,"Guantanamo Bay",in 2004.It is an eclectic mix of folk-jazz with tinges of African and Indian influences. The songs are a social commentary on world issues that seem to be inextricably linked to our lives in one way or another. The Mavrix are currently working on new material for their next album.
