About Me

1/2 Blue Heeler or Australian Cattle Dog (Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog to be exact), 1/4 German shepherd, 1/4 Australian shepherd= 100% pure fuzzy lovable dog. I used to work in an antique shop as a young pup while my Mom was in college, then I retired to a life of walks by the Columbia River, playing tennis in the backyard, and begging off my Grandpa for treats. Mom is strict and she doesn't give me any table scraps- but she makes biscuits that she makes are to BARK! for- so I forgive her.
I am also the best botany dog ever- this is the routine my Mom has:
-Takes me on a walk- gets 10 meters from the car. Looks at plant and possibly collects it as a specimen after carefully (and time-consumingly examining all the parts).
-Then she walks another 10 meters and looks at more plants.
-Then another 10-30 meters and stops to look at this-that-an-the-other (and you though dogs were bad for stopping to sniff...)
-I am very good the entire time (although I do try to find things to SNIFF) and usually sit pretty still. If it's hot I try to go for some shade to sit in while the human contemplates the life and diversity of plants.
-But, I do like to eat some of the plant samples sometimes that she has dug up for "scientific purposes"- mmmm... I think they are far better as brunch or a snack. Especially crunchy roots. Luckily my human is also an ethnobotanist- so she hasn't let me poison myself yet.
-Like-human like-dog (which came 1st again?): My human's favorite native plant is Lomatiums because they are endemic to N. America, have great diversity and are very useful as food and medicine; Lomatiums are my favorite plant because when the human isn't looking I eat the specimens that are dug up (quite tasty really- like carrots- crunchy even).
..
Species name: Canis stellaria (syn: Stella)
Description: 4 legged. Red-brown in color with black at tips of ears and tail, white belly, brown eyes. Stand-offish to strangers, but loyal to friends. Loves tennis balls, hates fireworks.
Habitat: Forests in the mountains, deserts in the valleys, everywhere in between. Can be found on the Columbia or Wenatchee Rivers on hot days. Prefers sandy beaches and trails, but has been reported from other locations far afield from roads or trails.
Distribution of Species: Common in Eastern Washington, Idaho and migratory in Oregon and Utah.
Distribution of Genus: Found throughout the world and on every continent.

My Interests

Sea kayaking, longboarding, walks, hiking, camping, chasing sticks and tennis balls, digging in snow and on sandy beaches. Ohhhh, sand is so good to dig in, especially next to a nice cool clean river.

I'd like to meet:

Nice people who treat dogs with kindness and respect, other animals, teddy bears and sock animals. People who would like to adopt pets (or folks) deserving lives instead of personally supporting breeding more!!

(Please think twice about adopting an ACD though if you don't know the breed. They are a challenge, but worth the rewards to those who love them.)

Music:

The Grateful Dead (I was named partly after that "Stella Blue" song- cause my mom knew it was so sad and there needed to be someone special like me in the world that would counter-balance that), Neil Young, SCI, Pack of Dogs.

Movies:

My Life as a Dog, A Streetcar Named Desire, Lord of the Rings (I think I would have been a good stunt double for Sam).

Television:

Animal Planet, The Dog Whisperer. Nnnnnoooooooooo video games- that is really boring!

Books:

The Art of Raising a Puppy, How to be Your Dog's Best Friend (both by the Monks of New Skete).

Heroes:

My human Mom and Uncle, Frodo and Sam, Green Lantern and Bruce Lee, Shaggy and Scooby Doo- Where would a hero be without a sidekick? It is really the sidekicks or friends or mates who live through all the action, and who help you, that make all of it worth it!

What to do on a cold winters day:

A. Dress the human up in numerous layers of clothes and take them for a walk. B. Play tennis ball hide-and-seek out in the snow. This can work two ways- if the dog is as motivated as Stella is- she w...

I'm special (the story of how I came to be here)

My canine mom was a Queensland Blue Heeler (different than a regular blue heeler in that the tails on Queensland ACD's are born short and are not cut off to achieve that effect). She lived in the neig...
