Die akustische Globalisierung führt immer wieder dazu, stets nur den Weitblick zu schärfen und auf die Charts der Nachbarländer zu schielen – die Perlen vor der eigenen Haustür bleiben immer noch viel zu oft unbeachtet. Dabei liegt das Gute oft so nah, das man drüber stolpern könnte. Das neue musikalische Selbstverständnis hierzulande mit einer Dichte an qualitativ hochwertigen Künstlern, die für Feuer in den Ohren sorgen, kommt schließlich nicht von ungefähr. Auch Jon Mesek aus München gehört zu diesen viel beachteten Perlen, an denen künftig niemand mehr vorbeikommen wird.
Schuld an der Musikbesessenheit des 25-jährigen Songwriters hatte die Großmutter. Wer weiß, was Jon Mesek heute machen würde, wenn die Oma ihm damals nicht ein altes Klavier geschenkt hätte? Sieben Jahre war Jon alt, mit Begeisterung klimperte der Knirps schon damals auf dem Instrument herum. Unterricht gab es obendrein. Irgendwann summte er zum Klavierspiel auch noch vor sich hin und fing an, die ersten Songs zu schreiben. „Das wollte ich immer und war schon damals meine große Leidenschaft“, sagt er. „Das hat sich dann immer weiter entwickelt.“ Mit zwölf spielte der Teenager bereits in seiner ersten Band. Und trat – bis auf eine Ausnahme – immer mit eigenen Songs im Repertoire auf. „Der einzige Titel, den ich je gecovert habe, war `Brown Eyed Girl` von Van Morrison.“ Ein „Bandtier“, wie es Jon nennt, war er allerdings nie. „Es war schon immer klar für mich, dass ich meine eigenen Ideen umsetzen will. Unter meinem Namen.“
Mehr als 50 Songs hat Jon Mesek bisher geschrieben. 11 davon haben es auf das Debüt-Album „In My Head“ geschafft und wurden von Produzent Roland Spremberg (u.a. A-HA, Brandy, Alphaville, Wingenfelder) in bewährt guter Manier behutsam bearbeitet. Denn die Musik ist das Wichtigste an diesem Debüt. In Jon Meseks Songs trifft die lässige Entspanntheit der Beatles auf die hymnischen Refrains von Bands wie Coldplay oder Travis und die Lust am perfekten Songwriting, wie es auch einen Dave Matthews auszeichnet. Songs wie das sehr britisch angehauchte „Hey You!“, das krachende „Like A Ballerina“ oder die erste hymnenhafte Single „We’re Gonna Live Today“ haben deshalb das Zeug dazu, die modernen Klassiker von Morgen zu werden. Mal ruhig, mal straight lässt Jon seine Songs erklingen, verfügt darüber hinaus über eine passende, kraftvoll-klare Stimme mit dem richtigen melancholischen Unterton, die hervorragend zur Gesamtharmonie des Albums passt. „Die Songs entsprechen meiner Grundstimmung“, sagt Mesek. „Ich bin auch eher ein etwas introvertierter Typ, der aber trotzdem genau weiß wo er hin will.“ Egal, ob Ballade oder Uptempo-Popsong – Jon Mesek zeigt sich als begnadeter, brillanter Sänger und Songwriter, dessen Stimme ebenso variantenreich ist wie sein Talent, durch Piano und Gitarre vorangetriebene Songs zu schreiben, die berühren und zugleich inspirieren.
Dass die Grundstimmung des Albums sehr britisch klingt, ist kein Zufall. Nach der Schule ging Jon nach Liverpool und studierte ein Jahr lang an dem von Paul McCartney gegründeten „Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts“ (LIPA) Songwriting, Soundtechnologie und Arrangement. Nach einem Jahr entschied er sich dafür, alles stehen und liegen zu lassen und in Deutschland sein Glück zu versuchen. „Ein guter Song ist ein guter Song“, sagt er. „Da interessiert es niemanden, ob man am Ende einen Abschluss hoch hält oder nicht.“ Und gute Songs schreiben, das kann der sympathische, in Konstanz geborene Songwriter. „Ich habe viele Menschen aus so vielen Ländern kennen gelernt, das war ungeheuer inspirierend und für meine Arbeit sehr hilfreich. Ich konnte richtig spüren, wie mein Songwriting sich dort Schritt für Schritt verbessert hat.“ Einer von Jons Dozenten war Mark Pearman, seinerzeit Gründungsmitglied von Sisters Of Mercy. „Der sagte zum Song `We’re Gonna Live Today` als Kommentar nur: ‘This Chorus is doing exactly what I want it to do.’ Das ist so ein Moment gewesen, wo man vor Glück und Stolz fast platzt und weiß, dass man auf dem richtigen Weg ist.“ Auch Paul McCartney hat er den Song vorgespielt. „Ich saß am Klavier, und er stand daneben, klopfte mit der Hand den Takt auf dem Holz mit und unterhielt sich danach mit mir auf Deutsch“, sagt er. „Das sind echt erhebende Momente, die Mut machen. Wenn ich nur ein hundertstel von dem erreichen kann, was McCartney erreicht hat, wäre ich sehr zufrieden.“ Auch die Texte, die der junge Musiker alle selbst schreibt, sind von persönlichen Situationen und eigenen, gelebten Geschichten inspiriert. „Ich kann nicht über Dinge schreiben, die nichts mit mir zu tun haben. Meine Songs sind alle ein Teil von mir.“
„Ich habe seit Liverpool un im letzten Jahr soviel gelernt. Ich bin jetzt einfach heiß und freue mich, meine Songs vor allem auch live zu präsentieren.“ Zauber, Poesie, gute Arrangements, ansteckende Melodien, Chartpotential, inspirierende Texte – der Mann ist Vollblutmusiker. Jon Mesek ist bereit für die große Bühne. Nirgendwo anders gehört ein Künstler mit dieser Kreativität, Energie und ungeheurem Potential auch hin.
Time and again acoustic globalisation constantly finds us casting our view far afield and stealing a glance at what is going on in the charts in neighbouring countries, the upshot being that we often ignore the musical quality available on our own doorstep. A quality which is so close that we can hardly move for tripping over it, and it is hardly a coincidence that a new domestic musical identity has ultimately been forged featuring a concentration of high-quality artists making a considerable impact on listeners. Jon Mesek from Munich is one of these highly regarded gems whom no one will be able to afford to ignore in future.
The musical obsession of the 25-year old songwriter goes back to his grandmother. Who knows what Jon Mesek would be doing today if she hadn’t once given him an old piano? An instrument which the young Jon was already enthusiastically banging around on at the age of seven. With a bit of teaching thrown in for good measure. At some point, he began humming along to the sound of the piano and began to write his first songs. “That was my aim all along, and it was something I felt passionate about even then”, he says. “It just kept developing.” At the age of twelve, the teenager was already playing in his first band. His set list consisted exclusively of his own songs, with a single exception. “The only song I’ve ever covered was ´Brown Eyed Girl` by Van Morrison.” Jon was never, however, a “band type of person”, as he puts it. “I was always clear in my mind that I wanted to realise my own ideas. Under my own name.”
Jon Mesek has written more than 50 songs to date, 11 of these making their way onto his debut album “In my Head”, which was carefully produced in his tried and tested manner by Roland Spremberg (whose credits include A-HA, Brandy, Alphaville and Wingenfelder) to reflect the fact that the music is the most important element of this first LP. Jon Mesek‘s songs bring together the casual relaxed approach of the Beatles and the anthem-like choruses of such bands as Coldplay and Travis and add into the mix the appetite for perfect songwriting which characterises the work of someone like Dave Matthews. All of which means that songs like the heavily British influenced “Hey You!”, the rocking “Like A Ballerina” or the first anthemic single “We’re Gonna Live Today” have the potential to become the modern classics of tomorrow. Jon’s songs sometimes feature a quieter mood, whereas others adopt a more straightforward sound. Added to all this is the spot-on powerful clarity of his voice, which is also capable of producing the right kind of melancholic undertones excellently suited to the overall harmony of the album. “The songs reflect my basic mood”, says Mesek. “I tend to be somewhat of an introverted character, although I know precisely the direction I want to go in.” Regardless of whether he is performing a ballad or an up tempo pop song, Jon Mesek shows himself to be a gifted and brilliant singer-songwriter whose voice is as multi-facetted as his talent and someone capable of writing piano and guitar driven songs which have the power to move and inspire at the same time.
It is no coincidence that the basic mood of the album sounds very British. After leaving school, Jon went to Liverpool and spent a year studying songwriting, sound technology and arrangement at the “Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts” (LIPA), founded by Paul McCartney. After this year, he decided to abandon everything and try his luck in Germany. “A good song is a good song”, he says. “Nobody cares whether you can hold up a certificate at the end of it.” And writing good songs is exactly what the congenial Mesek, born in Konstanz, is all about. “All the many people from so many different countries I’ve got to know have been a huge inspiration and a great help in my work. I could really feel my songwriting improving step-by-step while I was there.” One of Jon’s lecturers was Mark Pearman, once a founder member of the Sisters Of Mercy. “His only comment on the song `We’re Gonna Live Today` was: ‘This Chorus is doing exactly what I want it to do.’ That was a moment which had me practically bursting with happiness and pride and makes you realise that you are on the right road.” He also played the song to Paul McCartney. “I was sitting at the piano, and he stood next to me beating out the rhythm on the wood and chatted to me in German afterwards”, he says. “These are really uplifting and encouraging moments. If I can only achieve a hundredth of what McCartney has achieved, I would be a very happy man.” His lyrics, all of which the young musician writes himself, take their inspiration from personal situations and real experiences. “I can’t write about things which are nothing to do with me. All my songs are a part of me.”
“Since Liverpool and during the past year, I’ve learned such a lot. I am now just really up for it and am especially looking forward to performing my songs live.” Magic, poetry, good arrangements, catchy tunes, chart potential, inspiring lyrics – this is a man who has music in his blood. Jon Mesek is ready for the big stage. The only place for an artist displaying his levels of creativity, energy and enormous potential.
