TURNSTYLZZZZ!!

About Me

As a member of Turnstylz (www.myspace.com/turnstylzz) and Maracatu New York (www.maracatuny.com) my musical pursuits in NY have picked up tremendously. Turnstylz allows for musical creativity, utilizing my skills on bass and Brazilian percussion and fusing these elements in production and performance. Also, the Maracatu performance group provides a great outlet to learn and perform the traditional drum rhythms/patterns of Recife, Brazil. Combine all of this w/ hip hop-like beats, and you've got perfection!! Turnstylz is now rapper Styles P's band, so I'm expecting some great things in 2008. Check out the Styles P/Turnstylz video below, and let me know what you think!!Always open to collaboratE w/ hip hop artists, djs, other musicians and singers. Hit me up if you're interested! For more information about future performances/gigs, write [email protected] again!Trevan (aka Tre, Lando, and other names I prefer not to mention)Above: Turnstylz (me) backing up Styles P's in ProvidenceAbove: Turntylz backing up LOOT at Southpaw in Brooklyn

Influences: Growing up around Washington DC, I was quickly exposed to different types of music through my parents, whom are professional classical musicians. While classical was not my thing, I played cello for most of childhood learning to read music, hand positioning, and developed great ear training. As a kid I was more excited about the DC hip hop, and particularly GO GO scene, so combining different styles, whether classical instrumentation w/ hip hop or percussion, was of particular interest to me. This is when my passion for musical fusion was first developed. When I decided to ditch my cello and transition to the upright bass, I became even more influenced by diverse genres and musical cultures. Travel and studies in Latin America heavily influenced my interest in regional cultures, such as Belize, Brazil, and Peru, which create a unique musical mix by infusing the rhythms and styles of other cultures. After traveling through Brazil in 2001 I started leaning heavily towards afro-latin percussion, particulary Afro-Peruvian and those of north-eastern Brazil.
