Son of Melbourne jazz musician Gary Devine, Anthony was named after jazz legend Tony Williams. He took up piano in 1992 with his Aunt, and then a couple of years later moved on and studied with Andy Cowan (a prominent solo blues artist) until 1995. Later, Anthony progressed to bass guitar, studying under Dan West, Tony Hayes and other Melbourne jazz bassists, having played live performances with his Dad and Andy Cowan. From 1997 until 1999 Anthony also played bass for the Caulfield Grammar Orchestra. Anthony then took a break from playing from 2000 until 2003, and has now returned to the bass with a vengeance having thus far studied with Tim Pryde (K-Oscillate), and Wylie J. Miller (Grand Wazoo, Arrested Development), and Drew Deadman (SuperHeist). More recently Anthony joined Transmitter (an indie/alternative cover band) in 2005, who were active with Australian Entertainment Services and the PACE booking agency. In 2006 Anthony played with Tony Watkins (the Rock Blues Experiment) and his original drummer Mars Damaggio. As of 2007, Anthony has played and recorded with the progressive metal band ‘Scoria’, and has just put together a band with drummer Dave Wilkinson to provide the driving rhythms of ‘Funk In Public’.
Anthony has also been organizing Aussie Hip Hop and Funk gigs at many venues across Victoria since 2003 such as ‘End of the Line’, ‘Til The Break Of Dawn’.
