Influences: Albert Ayler, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp, Igor Stravinsky, Frank ZAPPA.
Sounds Like: Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp, and John Coltrane, blended into a 21st Century 'Pharoah Sanders meets Sun Ra' spiritual experience, with a soulfully planned harmonic cacophony. This is the best of acid jazz, free jazz, & avant-garde jazz -- sustained by phat rhythm sections that take you "straight ahead" -- "OUTSIDE."
Eddie Edwards, formerly known as Snakepit: "OUTSIDE DA' EDGE"Can you imagine what it would have been like for Stravinsky to join with Albert Ayler, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, and Sun Ra? JAZZ HISTORY:
ERIC ALLEN DOLPHY
alto sax, bass clarinet, clarinet, composer.
b. Los Angeles, CA, 06-28-1928
d. Berlin, Germany, 06-29-1964, Berlin, Germany.
Played with the Chico Hamilton quintet, and Charles Mingus. In 1961, Dolphy and Booker Little led their own quartet. In the same year, he became associated with John Coltrane. In '62, he formed his own group with Freddie Hubbard, recorded with Ornette Coleman and joined Orchestra U.S.A. In 1964, Dolphy recorded with his own group for Prestige, Blue Note and FM.
MC COY ALFRED TYNER
pianist, composer
b. Philadelphia, PA, 12-11-1938
Tyner's mother played piano and encouraged his early interest in music. Around 1953, he has his own jazz combo of teenagers. His early influences were Bud and Richie Powell.
Mc Coy went on to work with local groups, including Calvin Massey's band, in Philadelphia, where they were introduced to John Coltrane and worked a week with him.
In 1959, he joined Coltrane and stayed with him until December of 1965. During those years with Coltrane, Tyner developed into one of the most important young pianists in the 60's.
In Coltrane's own words, "First there is McCoy's melodic inventiveness . . . the clarity of his ideas . . . he also gets a very personal sound from his instrument; and because of the clusters he uses and the way he voices them, that sound is brighter than what would normally be expectyed from most of the chord patterns he plays. In addition, McCoy has an exceptionally well developed sense of form, both as a soloist and an accompanist. Invariably in our group, he will take a tune and build his own structure for it. He is always, in short, looking for the most personal way of expressing himself. He doesn't fall into conventional grooves. And finally, McCoy has taste. He can take anything, no matter how weird, and make it sound beautiful. (Feather, The Encyclopedia of Jazz in the Sixties, MCMLXVI)"
