About Me

"Barnaby is an extremely gifted drummer. I love his grooves and musical sensitivity. I've always found him very professional and thorough. It's a pleasure to play with such a great musician who can deliver both the live and in the studio."
- JULIA MESSENGER
singer/songwriter/electro producer

"World class drumming and top shelf sounds. Barnaby Gold adds real excitement to recordings with his incredible live playing."
- ANDREW OGBURN AKA 'BIG BOY LEMONADE'
pianist/composer/band leader
A drummer for 20 years, Barnaby Gold is a sought-after performer and educator of Jazz, Blues, and Funk music. Based in Melbourne, Australia, Barnaby developed a strong foundation through his early studies with Antony Citino and Paul Matcott. At 19, he won a national drumming title, moving on to refine his musicianship at the Victorian College of the Arts. In 2000, Barnaby spent three months in the United States, studying with some of the major exponents of New Orleans and New York drumming styles, including Shannon Powell, Johnny Vidacovich, John Riley, and Leon Parker. He has studied with 26 players in all. Barnaby has been a freelance drummer in Melbourne for 15 years, working with some of Australia's best-known Jazz and Blues performers - including Shelley Scown, Bob Sedergreen, Paul Williamson, Jeff Lang, and Kerri Simpson - and has played in New Orleans, New York, Hong Kong, and Thailand. He has taught at secondary and tertiary levels for ten years. His teaching bag is diverse, including Joe Morello's natural hand techniques, the American Rudiments, reading skills, New Orleans music, and the working drummer's groove vocabulary. Barnaby also sings and plays bass, and has a small studio to record session work at home. Barnaby endorses Premier Drums, Sabian Cymbals, and Vater Drumsticks.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Some of the people with whom I currently play include: Andrew Ogburn, Nick Freer, Barney Loveland, Mark Fitzgibbon, Cory Jach, White Noise Carousel, Jon Delaney, Enzo Ruberto, Danny Healy, ROOT!, among many other friends and collleagues around Melbourne.
Influences: Many and varied!!! I am essentially a jazz trained muso and have played any style necessary in order to make a living (most Melbourne musos would say the same)! I am influenced by everything from early New Orleans Second Line bands to Electronic music. My playing, I've been told, sounds very Australian. As an Australian musician, I have imported many different cultures into my playing. The fact that I live and perform in this beautiful, diverse country means that it all comes out in a unique, multi-faceted way. I think this is typical of musicians and other creative people who live in Melbourne.
Sounds Like: Me! But if I had to break it down, the players whose voices speak directly to my own include: Herlin Riley, Bill Stewart, Leon Parker, Ed Thigpen, Johnny Vidacovich, Shannon Powell, Jeffrey Alexander, Steve Jordan, and Billy Kilson.
