Mauricio Herrera

Mauricio was born in Holguin, Cuba, in 1972. He first entered the world of music at age 7, playing violin, but by 14 began studying percussion where he found his niche. After graduation from the Jose Maria Ochoa Conservatory in Holguin, he began playing in various popular groups, as well as with Caribe Nibor, and the folkloric group La Campana; meanwhile, he was on faculty at the Escuela Vocacional de Arte. In 1994 he moved to La Habana to broaden his horizons, where he played, toured, and recorded with the likes of Hector Valentin, La Barriada, Pachito Alonso, Manolin el medico de la salsa, Manolito Simonet and Paulito FG. While on tour in 2001 in Mexico he decided to stay behind, and lived in Mexico City until 2005. During his time in DF he worked with Amaury Gutierrez, David Torrens and Domingo Quinonez amongst others.
However, something by the name of jazz had been calling him for a while, and in February of 2005 Mauricio moved to New York. There you will find him playing with many different groups, including Son de Madre,Yerba buena, Yosvany Terry Afro-Cuban Roots, Osmany Paredes Cuartet, Oriente Lopez Group, Grupo Ibboru, Bryan Lynch, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Minino Band, Dany Lozada, La Bola, Obbini Tumbao, Michelle Rosewoman, and Candido Camero among others. Mauricio is also on faculty at Boys Harbor Conservatory where he teaches percussion.
El Mauro’s upbringing in Cuba gave him a fundamental understanding and love for syncopation; the diversity of New York now lets him manifest it.
Mauricio plays drum kit and percussion and is endorsed by Latin Percussion (LP) and Vic Firth.
