About Me

Patricio Díaz was born in Camagüey City, a province of Cuba, on May the 27th, 1.974. He attended the Escuela Vocacional de Artes “Luis Casa Romero” for a basic level diploma, and subsequently continued his musical studies in the Escuela Profesional de Música “José White” in Camagüey. At the age of sixteen, he moved to Havana, and pursued his vocational training under Calixto Oviedo’s leadership, a well-know percussionist of bands such as Adalberto Álvarez y su Son, and N.G. La Banda. Patricio Díaz also studied for six years with the legendary and internationally acclaimed percussionist, a member of “Los Van Van” band for more than twenty years, José Luis Quintana “Changuito”. Patricio soon became Changuito’s most outstanding timbale student. In Cuba, the young percussionist was a member of the following bands: “Conjunto Artístico”, “Percusión Sonora”, “Son del Barrio”, and “Algo Nuevo”. By 1.993, “Algo Nuevo” band flew to Venezuela to perform several shows, after which Díaz decided to stay in Caracas. His international work has led him to enjoy a busy career as an accompanist in first-rate-musician bands like Mauricio Silva, Orlando Watussi, Eric Francheski, Orlando Poleo, Latin Son, Ron al Punch, Mariana, Mulenze, Lalo Rodríguez, Maelo Ruíz, Larry Harlow, Cano Estremera, Marvin Santiago, David Pabón, Guayacán, Ángel López, Fania All Stars, La Teambanda, among others. Díaz participated as an instrumentalist and speaker in the First Meeting of Timbale Players, sponsored by Fundarte, an event which took place in the Room “Juan Bautista Plaza” of the National Library, in Caracas. His work and approach as a musician is reflected in an interview that appeared in the book “Timbaleros en Caracas” (Timbale players in Caracas). The book was produced by the Alcaldía del Municipio Libertador along with the Fundación Orquesta Sinfónica Municipal and Fundapatrimonio, in July, 2004. This special edition embraced the point of view of the most skillful timbale players in Caracas. During 2002 and 2003, Patricio Díaz was appointed by the Coordination of Extension in the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences (F.A.C.E.S.) in the Universidad Central de Venezuela as a professor for Timbale classes. He has made countless records and clinic/solo appearances along his career. He is a percussion arranger, and the only musician in Venezuela who teaches ..“Pailetería”, a mix of “Paila Cubana” with drums components. He also plays for Cabijazz and “Team Vip” groups (“Team Vip” is sponsored by the trumpet player, arranger and Grammy winner, Luis “Papo” Márquez, the producer of “Son del Alma”, a disc of Willie Chirinos). In the most recent “Team Vip” work, Patricio Díaz had the opportunity to record along with musicians like Giovanni Hidalgo, Arturo Sandoval, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and Justo Betancourt. One of his most important achievements in his career has been to be the musical co-producer, percussion arranger and player of the first disc, as a soloist, of the internationally acclaimed percussionist José Luis Quintana “Changuito”. The disc was produced by Disquera Cacao Música, in Caracas-Venezuela in 2005, and gathered outstanding musicians like Horacio “El Negro” Hernández, Giovanni Hidalgo, among others.
