Some of my favorite things include:
gardening,
bicycling (in fact, since December 06, a bicycle has become PRIMARY mode of commuter transport...by CHOICE!)
attending arts and cultural events
spending time on the Coast and collecting shells
and hanging out in coffeehouses or tea rooms spending quality time with family, friends and aquaintences. I'm working very hard to revive the "Great Lost Art Of Conversation" in the 21st century lol...
If you check out my blog from time to time, you'll find that I have a great many interests, hobbies, passions and beliefs, and concerns....
You'll also find that the word "boredom" is NOT a part of my vocabulary...and what's more, it NEVER will be!
Why? Well, to me, life is a gift from the One above...an ADVENTURE, with many lessons to be learned and friends to be made...
So given the choice between being someone who is "easily amused" or someone who is "easily jaded" I choose the former...it's so much more fun that way :)
People from all over the world who are upbeat and who can demonstrate via their myspace pages or other online presence that they are one or more of the following types of persons:
"Culture Vultures"...those who love art, literature, poetry, theatre, cinema, dance, etc...
Amateur or professional singers, songwriters, poets, writers, actors, artists or other creative types who are working hard and trying to make their mark whether in the "big time" or just in their own communities.
amateur historians, lingusts, astronomers or geographers
Folks who are concerned about the environment...and working to effect change in this respect...
Other Episcopalians/Anglicans or other inclusive and open minded Christians or spiritual persons regardless of their faith community/religion
philomaths (people who love learning)
Former Marines and other vets
and, of course, uncompromisingly loyal and true Rick Springfield fans!
MUSIC is my world! Most everything that has happened in my life tends to remind me of a song...and it's rare that I don't have a song in my head at any given moment of the day :)
A few of my "faves" and musical influences...
Favorite classical composers? Mozart and Rachmaninoff.
Favorite female vocalist/guitarists? Joni Mitchell, Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart)
Favorite Jazz artist? Ella Fitzgerald
Favorite band? The Beach Boys
Most frequently listened to genres? Power pop, New Age, Surf, Rockabilly, Classical, New Age, Blues, Jazz, Showtunes/Soundtracks, Celtic, Country/Western esp "Cowboy" music, Acoustic, Folk, World Beat...
Other various musical faves and/or influences include:
Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Dan Fogelberg,Richard Marx, The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Eric Carmen and The Raspberries, Barry Manilow, Tracy Chapman, Roberta Flack, Carly Simon, Carol King, Laura Nyro, Todd Rundgren, John Denver, Ian Tyson, Michael Martin Murphey, Johnny Cash, Bobbie Gentry, Janis Joplin, Bessie Smith, Janis Ian, Memphis Minnie, Bessie Smith, Chrissy Hynde and the Pretenders, Stevie Wonder and Bob Bennett
Here's one of my favorite songs by the band Heart. Taught it to myself on guitar last year...just wish I had Ann Wilson's vocal range in order to really do it justice...
So...who's my top, A-number 1, primary music influence aka "fave rave", the lifelong passion I will hold THE TORCH for 'till the day I go into the next world?
RICK SPRINGFIELD...
without a doubt!
Why?
Because....
Hee Hee!
Ever since 1972, I have been a uncompromisingly LOYAL and TRUE fan of this songwriter, singer, guitarist and actor! IMO if anyone's life/career emobodies the spirit of the American Dream, it's Rick...definitely!
While Rick has an amazing and surprisingly diverse musical catalog spanning 40 years in the biz, it was the first US "folk-ish" hit from '72 entitled "Speak To The Sky" that lit the initial spark for me!
Yes, this is the song that inspired me to go back to those guitar lessons I had abandoned a year before....
then eventually start writing my own songs and poetry...
and then eventually lead me to becoming dissatisfied with merely reading teenzines, kissing the posters, daydreaming, fantasizing, and just being satisfied with living vicariously at the 'teenybopper' level of fandom!
Sure, lots of girls around the world dreamed of marrying Rick, but how many do you know who actually wanted to BE him? lol...
Yes, I credit Rick's music and career example with giving me the inspiration and imputus to get out there, go for my dreams of being a performer myself...and while I will more than likely never know the level of success he has been blessed with, I am still eternally grateful for the music and the appearance of that "musical avatar" back in '72...and thankful for the opportunity to meet him in person back in March 2006 to tell him my story, too!
Not that it means I'm completely immune to his looks and charm...hey, I'm human...AND a woman...so I too can get sucked into that wonderful and sensual "vortex", as quick as the next fan (even though I do try very hard to keep things in perspective hahaha)!
My three favorite movies of all time are:
Somewhere In Time...
IMO it is the MOST romantic movie ever made and the best role the late Christopher Reeve ever had. The chemistry between him and Jane Seymour is fantastic...plus the subject of time travel has always fascinated me. I like this movie because it doesn't rely on fancy special effects, language, extreme violence or graphic sex scenes to make it interesting...and I LOVE the James Barry soundtrack!
Mrs. 'Arris Goes To Paris...
This 1992 made-for-TV movie doesn't get half the credit it deserves! It's a delightful story based on a 1959 short story by Paul Gallico about a British charwoman who dreams of owning a Dior dress, and works hard to make her dream a reality. Stars Angela Lansbury, Omar Sharif, Diana Rigg
Mr & Mrs. Loving...
A true story that proves love sees no color. It is based on a real couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, and on one of the most important (but least discussed) Civil Rights/personal freedoms cases in the history of the USA. This year, June 12, marks the 40th Anniversary of Loving vs. Virginia, the Supreme Court decision that ended the laws against interracial marriage nationwide. Stars Lela Rochon and Timothy Hutton
Other film faves? Titanic, The Devil Wears Prada, Hard To Hold, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Muriel's Wedding, Carousel, Dirty Dancing, classic Disney...
also, for me THE PLAY'S THE THING! I try to go to at least four live plays a year. Amongst my faves in that respect? Anything Shakespearean, light operettas, musicals...
Despite the fact I worked as a television news production assistant for six years, I'm not really much of a TV watcher...
in fact ever since Peter Jennings passed away, I've not had much use for TV news! These days, I get most of my news online websites for major city daily newspapers such as the Los Angeles Times....and I occasionally listen to the international news off the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) or on National Public Radio (NPR)...
Occasionally I'll tune in an educational program on
Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) ...my faves on that station are Great Performances, Masterpiece Theatre, Nature, various British Comedies,Globe Trekker, Rick Steve's Europe.and for any good National Geographic or Smithsonian Specials...
Ok, so it's not a real ad, but I thought it was funny so I can't resist including it here..

I've loved to read ever since learning how to at age 4, but I don't really have a favorite genre that I read exclusively. I enjoy reading all sorts of fiction and non-fiction...but I tend to favor the genres of history, biography, international or ethnic studies, travel, art, poetry and spirituality/self-improvement...
and ok,...yes I DO admit it...once in a while,I'll indulge in the guilty pleasure of reading the occasional romance novel, too...I like 'em all...from sweet to sizzlin' spicy!
Favorite romance author? Barbara Taylor Bradford ...but she also writes great non-fiction, too!
Fave bookstore? Powell's City Of Books in Portland, Oregon. It is allegedly the largest independent bookstore in the world. I really can't confirm that, but I do know from observation that the building on Burnside does cover an entire city block, and that it requires a map to explore the store in its entirety...but what an adventure! When I die, I hope heaven is like Powell's...then I know I'll feel at home...
Here are a few of my favorites reads that are part of my personal library, books that I've frequently recommended to others:
