Eric Hein and the Northerners is a Montreal-based group of improvisational musicians. The music draws from many different influences (both music and literature). The format is always changing and the songs are always different from show to show. When we record we try to record as live and as real as possible... for better or worse.

Anything with guts: favorites include (in no particular order) Bob Dylan, Clapton (the bluesman), The Tragically Hip, Muddy Waters, Lightning Hopkins, Neil Young, Beck, The Beatles, Ryan Adams, Nick Drake, The Grateful Dead, The Meters, and many others.

In terms of literature, influences include John Updike (Rabbit Run), Vonnegut (Slaughter House-Five), Hemingway (The Sun Also Rises), Evelyn Waugh (Decline and Fall), Ian McEwan (Enduring Love and Amsterdam), Michael Ondaatje (The Collected Works of Billy the Kid), Miriam Toews (A Complicated Kindness), Walt Whitman (Song of Myself), Zora Neil Hurston (Our Eyes Were Watching God), Kate Chopin (The Awakening), F-Scott Fitzgerald (The Great Gatsby), and so on.
