SXSW compiled a brief about Alabama 3:
In March 2008 the Alabama 3, best known internationally for their theme song for The Sopranos, Woke Up This Morning, are embarking on their first US tour in nearly ten years. Their music has been used on The Simpsons and various hollywood blockbusters including Gone in 60 seconds, and a Life Less Ordinary and their live shows have consistently wowed audiences for years. When best-selling horror writer Stephen King recently visited the UK for the first time in 10 years he requested they play at his latest book launch. They have been enthusiastically called, “The best live band in Britain” by the British newspaper The Guardian. The band started at a south London house party where the founders came up with the idea of assuming American accents, concealing their bloodshot eyes behind wraparound sunglasses and creating a new type of music. As their starting point they took classic American blues-rock and mixed it with acid house, techno, and country. The band’s 1997 debut album Exile on Coldharbour Lane is widely acknowledged as a masterpiece. Ten years and six classic albums later Alabama 3 release M.O.R. to five-star reviews and critical acclaim across the board. "…an unholy communion of politics, religion, sex and drugs; presented via some of the most infectious, well-rooted grooves you'll hear all year," said the Independent. The Alabama 3 are out to rock The US for the first time in 10 years with their stripped-down, acoustic line up consisting of Larry Love (vocals) Devlin Love (vocals), Rock Freebase (guitar) and Harpo Strangelove (harmonica). While the full band has already conquered the main stage at the world-famous Glastonbury Festival, this year the unplugged band headlined the prestigious Cambridge Folk Festival to an amazing audience response. Gentle folk types were converted to the Alabama 3 unplugged with the same enthusiasm which the Glastonbury crowds have taken to the full band. Rock Freebase has consistently earned his position as a top Mississippi delta blues guitarist and, coupled with Larry’s poisonous vocals, Devlin Love’s sweet soul singing and Harpo Strangelove’s harmonica, it is no wonder they have been hailed as the best live band in the UK. International best-selling author of Trainspotting, Irvine Welsh, famously said about The Alabama 3, “They are the only band I can dance to without chemical assistance and that’s saying something.”
