About Me

And what am I, my dear friends? I have told you: an absintheur! Absintheur, pur et simple! I am a thing more abject than the lowest beggar that crawls through Paris whining for a sou! I am a slinking, shuffling beast—half-monkey, half-man—whose aspect is so vile, whose body is so shaken with delirium, whose eyes are so murderous, that if you met me by chance in the daytime, you would probably shriek for sheer alarm! But you will not see me thus; daylight and I are not friends. I have become like a bat or an owl in my hatred of the sun! At night I live. At night I creep out with the other obscene things of Paris, and by my very presence, add fresh pollution to the moral poisons in the air! I gain pence by the meanest errands; I help others to vice—and whenever I have the opportunity, I draw down weak youths. For twenty francs, I will murder or steal. All true absintheurs are purchasable! For they are the degradation of Paris, the slaves of mean, insatiable madness, which nothing but death can cure.

Read perseveringly with all your eyes, nay even with your most secret eye: ruffians; bon vivants; hetaerae; people who are fluent in the West Saxon dialect of Old English; lascivious catamites; those bothered by faulty punctuation; maenads; assembleges of suburban women in massive SUVs who back out of their driveways in unison whilst greedily guzzling their Nouveau Riche-brand yoghurt beverages; eldalië; clodhoppers; Daleks; rapscallions who "inexplicably" pepper their writings with quotations marks, ostensibly for emphasis; pasiaj Esperantistoj; thaumaturges; people who employ the words edgy and fierce with moderate frequency; hillbillies; medievalists; pernicious revenants; Corinne Bohrer groupies; compulsive proofreaders; renunciants; Lotus-Eaters; fervid grammarians; Pre-Raphaelites; those to whom grandiloquent wordsmithery comes naturally; Egyptologists; spiritualist mediums; absinthe bootleggers; Hesychasts; hipster fashion victims whose standards of beauty are in keeping with those of the 14th century; champions of prolixity; powdered coxcombs; calligraphers; soda jerks; loup-garous/lycanthropists; bull fighters; vapid youths of limited epistemic capacity; bedraggled inebriates; the Eumenides; 19th-century dandies; troglodytes; alchemists bored now by transmuting metals; Romanovs; people who can appreciate awful Canadian action programs; root doctors; copyediting superstars who strongly disapprove of aspects of AP style guidelines; wanton layabouts; and other assorted epicureans.

Don't bother requesting my friendship, please, if you're a random, self-promoting band of any sort, as I find them quite wearisome; bands whose members I know OR WORSHIP are excepted, naturally. Also, I won't typically approve friendship requests from people who don't first write to me—not that anyone given to that sort of behavior would take the time to read this. For the most part, though, I'm open to correspondence.
