We are a group of artists who go by the name of DA!, which stands for Direct Action! We occupy empty buildings in central London, and use them as Art-Spaces (ArtSquarters) which are free, and open to the general public. We squat the buildings, and transform them (paint the walls, install lighting and set up music equipment), then open the doors to anyone who may need space to work on, share, discuss, debate or exhibit their artwork. Artists, musicians, performers... anyone who seeks a venue for fresh, original ideas are more than welcome to drop by and hang out. In creating such a space we also interrupt the urban landscape, offering an alternative to what many Londoners will recognise as 'cloned highstreets', through a creation which could only be described as one big, ongoing 'happening'. Check the videos & photos for documentary footage. Our flagship DA! Artspace was located on 43 High Street Kensington - this in itself being a form of 'intervention' ('An Art-Squat in Kensington??') DA! has had two articles in The Evening Standard newspaper, talked live on BBC London Radio, an article in Time Out magazine, a show on resonance fm. DA! is comprised of Simon McAndrew, his wife Bogna McAndrew, Stephanie Smith, Samuel Conrad, Murat Bulut Aysan, Tom Sleeman, Roger White, Paul Webb, Julika and Sam Padfield. Asides from each being a member of DA!, these individuals are artists in their own rights, each with different pratices. What unites them is the common ideal and concern of establishing a space where artists, artworks and ideas can meet and proliferate. Feel free to contact us and, more importantly, get involved!.
