About Me

Also see www.myspace.com/joinmemask for news on The M.A.S.K.
I spent about 30 years of my life in London, and following a brief stint in Brighton moved up to Chester with my girlfriend. I'm not sure really how to describe who I really am. In the past I'm been a geek, a day-dreamer, an art-student, a cartoonist, a poet, a rocker, a goth, a raver, a graphic designer, a singer in a band (for all of five rehearsals), a member of 'a cult' and a trekker across the Peruvian Andes. Right now I can add a dad to the list, but I'm also the sum of everything that's been before. I'm looking to tack accomplished writer onto the end, but bear with me a while.
On the 25th October, 2006, one friend (one of two Hazels) described me as follows:
I harbour no illusions about young Si's goodness (although I do admit this wavered with the figs and honey birthday meal for Laura...); we all know he is a degenerate and corrupt person hiding in a sweet-faced exterior. This very paradox is what makes him so dangerous, and this is the reason he has got so far in his life of crime and wickedness. His nickname to the police is 'Pappa Depraved - do not approach!'. I have that on good authority

My Interests

My interests are constantly changing, so the various bits and pieces listed below may have already changed. I work in graphic design, so I love graphic imagery. I'm also a fan of horror, dark sci-fi and dark humour. I'm interested in general weirdness, love disecting old mythologies and philosophies and collect tarot cards. I ocassionally read them too.

I've been doing some writing tied in the various stories about The King In Yellow - which can be checked out at http://.kinginyellow.wikia.com

Below is a slide-show of various bits and pieces that have held my attention over the last ten years or so, plus various drawings, designs and 'pieces' I've worked on myself...

I'd like to meet:

Myself, 20 years on... oh, no, maybe not...

There's a whole bunch of people whose work I really admire, but when I met one of them for a book-signing I kinda clammed up and said "thank you" rather than engaging in conversation. So, as a pre-requisite, let there be beer, whisky and/or fine wine available first.

Grant Morrison @ DisinfoCon

Creator of "The Invisibles" and "The Filth" Grant Morrison talks about his hashish induced alien encounter, the use of sigils to change the world, the nature of the individual and the future of the counter-culture.
And below, one of my favourite combinations - a favourite song and a favourite film...

Music:

There used to be an mp3 player on this page. Now, rather than subject you to my tastes in music I've put something 'relatively' easy to listen to on the page.

I listen to all sorts of music - at the moment that's through a combination of last.fm and Myspace:

Movies:

I'm quite happy to watch most films but those which stand out for me for one reason or another include Battle Royale, The Blair Witch Project, A Company of Wolves, Chasing Amy, The City of Lost Children, The Crow, Delacatessen, Ed Wood, Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind, Fight Club, The Grudge, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Leon, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Lost In Translation, Napolean Dynamite, Natural Born Killers, Ring, Shaun Of the Dead, Jan Svankmeyer animated films, 28 Days Later, The 52nd State

Television:

American Gothic, Big Train, Brass-Eye, The Day Today, The Green Wing, Jam, Lost, My Name Is Earl, Neverwhere, The Prisoner, Six Feet Under, Spaced, Urban Gothic

Books:

Aberat, Alice In Wonderland, Amphigorey, Amphigorey Too, Amphigorey Also, And The Ass Saw The Angel, Blood Song, Brave New World, Caged, Coraline, The Diceman, The Doors of Perception, Falling Out Of Cars, Flood, The Golem, Griffin & Sabine, Hellblazer, Join Me, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, The King In Yellow, The Last Days: The Apocryphon of Joe Panther, Lost Souls, Neverwhere, Nymphomation, Ring, Spiral, The Sandman, A Series Of Unfortunate Events, Sophie's world, The Time Traveller's Wife, Varjak Paw, The Wizard of Pigeons, The Wolves in the Wall, Yes Man, 101 Experiments in the Philosophy of Everyday Living, The Farseer Trilogy, The Liveship Traders Trilogy, The Tawny Man Trilogy

Heroes:

Most of my heroes are dead or fictional. Let's list a few fictional ones: John Constantine (the British trenchcoat version, not the Keanu Reeves one), Ghost (Lost Souls), Fool (from The farseer Trilogy, amongst others).

But realistically, real life heroes? Photographer/photomanipulator Dave McKean. Various front-men for various bands. I've really liked the sound of Alan Moore and Grant Morrison. And if I said John Tynes and Denis Detwiller to you... nah, probably wouldn't mean much, huh?

If you really want to know then you can ask...

"The burdens that you carry now
Are not of your creation
So let's not weep for their evil deeds
But for their lack of imagination"
