Creature, a black metal band from Sint-Niklaas (BE), was first found in 2001 by Stefan De Vylder (vox) and Wouter Keppens (guitars). After a period of uncertainties, along with a few line-up changes, Creature had a quite stable line-up in 2001 with the addition of Diederik Vermeulen (drums) and Tim Keppens, ex-guitar player for the metalcore band Roach from Sint-Niklaas, as second guitar player. With this line-up a first demo CD was recorded, called “Apocalyptic Dawnâ€, which brought a mixture of death and thrash metal. In 2003, Creature recorded their first MCD and was released as “Triumph of the Unbornâ€. The general genre was described as melodic black metal, combined with influences of other metal genres (as death, thrash, viking and power metal). Musically as well as lyrically, this album was inspired by JRR Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Ringsâ€. The band members each took an alias, in the general lines of this concept. With this EP and the following successful live shows, Creature had put its mark on the Belgian metal map.Anno 2004, frontman for Antwerp’s leading melodic folk metal band Lemuria was added to Creature’s line-up as bass player. With the coming of the new bass player (Sancti), some (subtle) changes in musical genre took effect.
The melodic parts in the music which marked the atmosphere of “Triumph of the Unborn†were replaced by more dark and heavier parts, but the main vision of songwriting staid the same (combining different metal genres). After two years, Sancti decided to quit and left Creature at the end of 2005. A few weeks later, he was replaced by Michaela Van Fleteren (Isis). In July 2006, Creature was contacted by metaldistro.be for the release of their first full length CD. This album, called “Dying Nationâ€, was recorded in Dungeon Studio’s (Oudenaarde, BE) and released in February 2007. “Dying Nation†brought forth a more dark and raw atmosphere then the first MCD. The main concept of this album was a post-apocalyptic vision, which fitted right with the musical style. The release of “Dying Nation†was supported by a promotional mini-tour through the entire Flanders, from Hasselt to Ieper.
