Brillantly witty, sarcastic and deeply committed to black history, Baad Ass Poetry marks Castina Charles grand debut as a poet of note. With her influences ranging from Claude McKay, Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou, her love affair with language is evident. This groundbreaking collection of poetry provides a thought provoking critique of society. A wonderful read, truly befitting the title "Baad Ass."

Who is the Baad Ass Poet
You know a lot of folks in describing themselves have either two problems: saying either two much or nothing at all. I figured since I am a writer I pretty much have a lot of shit to say. I'm going to skip the traditional third person route that most artists like to take in describing themselves. I feel instead of selling myself and talking a whole lot of b.s. about my accomplishments so folks can but my stuff, I'd just be real with everyone and speak from the heart.
First and foremost I am a poet (a baad ass one at that) and I'm having this intense, orgasmic experience with language right now. I love the syllabic fluidity of sensously constructed statements. Secondly, and maybe more importantly, I am a woman ALL woman and enjoy being one. I love being sexy, I love making sexy statements, I bask in my feminity. Anything else, well let's see, I have a killer sense of humor. I love laughing, hearing myself laugh, and hearing others laugh. I laugh at nothing and everything. My favorite moments are when you are with a friend and you laugh at something completely stupid, that only you and that other person could find funny. Those are the best.
I'm also a New Yorker, and to an extensively large degree that has shaped who I am. NY is a city of contradictions, juxtapositions, great food, and really overcrowded trains- which in essence describes me-contradictory, passionate lover of food, and avid train rider. Aside from that, well no I think I'll stop here, I'm talking way too much. I suppose I can't help myself, I'm a poet whose having this intense love affair with language, and in the midst of a great love I find myself pondering the opening verses of John 1:1 "In the beginning was the word."

Sofi's Load
Sofi's Load is a moving and powerful text. It is the author's first novel, and the second book which I have read from her so far, the first being Poetry In Haiti, a must read for anyone interested in Haitian culture crafted in the hands of a literary genius.Once again I find myself enraptured by Ms. Simon's mastery of language and her superb craftmanship. She imbues her text with such emotion and artistic sensability, that as a reader you cannot help but be moved by the power of her words. The novel itself is an inspirational text, filled with endurance and courage against much cruelty and hardship. Sofi's story is not only a personal memoir, but a symbolic metaphor of Haiti and its women-admidst all adversity and persecution the courage and the tenacity to persevere still remains strong.Sofi's Load is a beautifully written novel, one that I'm sure will become a literary classic. I anxiously await for Ms. Simon's forthcoming work.
Poetry in Haiti
To say that Fania Simon is only a poet would be a mere understatement. She is a prophetic artist, a lyrical genius, who creates magic through her words. Poetry in Haiti is perhaps one of the most moving books I have ever read. A collection of poetry and short stories Ms. Simon successfully imbues her work with the consciousness of her people. From the first verse to the last you are presented with the spirit of Haiti. Her acknowledgements "To Jean J. Dessalines, Touissant Louverture, Henry Christophe," the forefathers of the Haitian Revolution, firmly roots this text in the blood and spirit of Haiti. The remainder of the pieces carry this message. At once prideful, celebratory, nostalogic, poignant and revolutionary, her words are always moving. This book is a must read for all Haitians, but more significantly for anyone interested in great art and beauty, and is willing to ride on the spiritual pilgrimage to Haiti, that Ms. Simon takes you on.
And her latest book Surviving Loving A Ghost
Surviving Loving a Ghost is like a personal road map to the stage of life, an ongoing war between one's flesh and one's soul. As you travel through the pages you'll find a path to true love. Fania Simon is passionately feasting on words that may bring a smile or a frown to your face. Through poetry, she is exploring the power of love, lust, laughter, deceit, tears, growth and the power within. Her words are real and raw. They will come alive in your mind.
