Rodrigo Cantú, MSc - MUSICIAN, COMPOSER & PRODUCER, born and raised in Monterrey México, founder of several projects as a drummer and keyboardist in the jazz and progressive rock local scene. After six years of elementary music education, at the age of 12, started with percussion lessons with Karim Garza during junior high at Liceo Anglo Francés de Monterrey, after a few years once in high school got involved with jazz taking courses with Daniel Ulloa and Rodolfo Soto through the Departmento de Difusión Cultural at Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM). In 1996 founded NOSTOC, a jazz fusion & blues young band that later ..ed playing at local jazz festivals; like AULA MAGNA FESTIVAL DE JAZZ MTY 1999 and FESTIVAL DE JAZZ PRIMER AIRE BAR 1999, schools and bars with their own compositions and standards arrangements during the next four years. In 1999, he produced and hosted the weekly radio show "Paralelo", based in progressive rock, jazz and experimental music, at the college radio station for two years. During 2000 founded MARTILLO JAZZ, a jazz/funk band brass leaded, who started to be the host band of the Primer Aire Bar for several months; being the only formal jazz bar in the city those days. During that year he also founded TORCA, a progressive rock trio; now playing the keyboards instead of the drums. The next year they released an eponymous CD internationally distributed by Asenath Records, and been invited to open shows for international artists in México such as California Guitar Trio (USA), Julio Revueltas (MEX), Jaime Rosas Trio (CHILE) and Cabezas de Cera (MEX). During all these years, has also got involved in music production, audio engineering, recording, mixing, editing and composing music for other projects and for his own. In 2002, Mr. Cantú was awarded from the State Government of Nuevo León because of his accomplishments in the Arts in the music field. In 2004, graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in Psychology from UDEM and traveled to study stress management and performance wellness in performing artists with a music therapy approach through Performance Wellness, Inc. based in New York City. In 2005, and a few months later started with formal trumpet lessons with Daniel Ortiz from FAMUS-UANL and also formal jazz composition with Saúl Martínez at UDEM. That year, begin as a drummer/percussionist and audio producer with local latin jazz project NATURAL JAZZ COLLECTIVE, that was awarded later on from Consejo para la Cultura y las Artes de Nuevo León (CONARTE), to release their first recording. He has been attending jazz master classes with Dr. David Schroeder, Rich Shemaria (NYU Jazz Dpt.), and chilean drummer Gabriel Puentes. He is currently producing, composing, performing and recording with different local projects. His official discography includes Torca (Asenath Records 2001) and Natural Jazz Collective (CONARTE 2005). Mr. Cantú is currently an employee at Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) offering psychological support in a health center. He recently graduated from the Master of Science in Health Psychology degree program at UANL, doing research mainly in performing musicians' psychology and chronic diseases psychosocial aspects.
