Ian Hemp: 10th Anniversary
naturally enhanced electronic surf beats
Ian Hemp is a one-man electronic project from Hamburg/Germany that started in 1996, based on tricky beats, weird sounds, and pop melodies. It's the perfect soundtrack for naturally enhanced surfing or chillin' in the darkness...
Before his career as an electronic artist, Ian played the drums in Hamburg's late-90s cult funk and acid jazz band "B.W.I.", which made a pretty deep impact on thousands of fans in the biggest and best-known Hamburg clubs.
Then everything started in 1994 with Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter", a really nice dark-haired girl and some natural enhancement... The most overwhelming experience in Ian's life until that day - and even until today. Some days later The Orb hit his brain with their "Little Fluffy Clouds", which was another big influence.
In 1995 Ian had the pleasure to watch an MTV show where the ingenious Orbital performed their even more ingenious "Snivilisation" album. This experience blasted him away thoroughly: That was what he wanted! And so he bought his first sound module (a Roland D-110) and a drum computer (Boss DR-660) and started making electronic music.
Another big influence had been the Sonar 97 festival in Barcelona/Spain, which Ian accidentally attended during summer holidays - the next big blast that fastened his musical style.
Until 2006 Ian recorded a lot of tracks in a lot of moods and styles - in fact, one for each life situation. None of these tracks had ever been officially released by a real label. In 2006 Ian decided to close the "Ian Hemp" files, but the hundreds of tracks still remain unheard... He's drumming again for Hamburg's next big super rock group "Cordrausch" , which is now (with him), in fact, one half of the ancient cult band "B.W.I."...
UPDATE: Ian Hemp is back! For 2007, Ian decided to continue this project with new sounds and a sober approach - check out the new tracks on ianhemp.com !
