Locking:
Locking (originally Campbellocking) is a style of funk dance and street dance. It relies on fast and distinct arm and hand movements combined with more relaxed hips and legs. The movements are generally large and exaggerated, and often very rhythmic and tightly synched with the music. Locking is quite performance oriented, often interacting with the audience by smiling or giving them a high five, and some moves are quite comical in nature.
Locking was originally danced to traditional funk, such as James Brown. Funk music is still commonly favored by locking dancers, and used by many competitions such as the locking division of Juste Debout.
The name is based on the concept of locking movements, which basically means freezing from a fast movement and landing in a certain position, holding that position for a short while and then continuing in the same speed as before. These movements create a strong contrast towards the many fast moves that are otherwise performed quite continuously, combined with mime style performance and acting towards the audience and other dancers. Locking includes quite a lot of acrobatics and physically demanding moves, such as landing on ones knees and the split. These moves often require knee protection of some sort.
.
Popping (a.k.a. hitting) is a funk dance and street dance style based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer's body, referred to as a pop or a hit. This is done continuously to the rhythm of a song in combination with other mime-style movements. Popping is also used as an umbrella term for a group of illusionary dance styles and techniques that are often combined with popping to create a more varied performance. The effect of popping as entertainment hinges on an almost-surrealistic contrast between the human dancer and the unnatural moves performed. Like other street dances popping is often performed in battles and thus involves competitive tricks such as mocking the opponent. There are a number of techniques and styles that are often combined with popping to enhance the dancer's performance and create a more varied show. When using popping as an umbrella term, these can also be considered a part of popping. Terms:Dime stopping, Animation, Boogaloo/electric boogaloo, Floating, gliding and sliding, Liquid dancing, Popping/hitting, Puppeting, Robot/botting, Slow motion,Strobing, Ticking,Tutting/King Tut, Vibrating, Waving
Dancehall: Dancehall has energised Jamaican popular music because it has spawned dance moves that help to make parties and stage performances more energetic. Many dance moves seen on hip-hop videos are actually variations of dancehall moves such as the butterfly, the bogle, the heel and toe, the blaze blaze, the pon the river, pon the bank, and the dutty wine. All variations of the dancehall style are here on the dancehall guide. Dancehall as a culture and concept has a much longer history than that. Moreover, like hip-hop, dancehall refers not only to a music and a space, but to a whole culture that encompasses music, language, dance, dress, and world views.
Break/ Breaking/ B-boying/ B-girling: Breakdance, breaking, b-boying or b-girling is a street dance style that evolved as part of the hip hop movement among African American and Latin American youths in the South Bronx of New York City during the early 1970s. It is normally danced to funk or hip hop music, often remixed to prolong the breaks, and is arguably the best known of all hip hop dance styles. A breakdancer, breaker, b-boy or b-girl refers to a person who practices breakdancing.
House: House is a style of street dance danced to house music. It's improvisational in nature and emphasizes fast and complex footwork combined with fluid movements in the torso. House is primarily 3 styles: Footwork, Jacking, and Lofting. It includes a variety of techniques and sub-styles that include skating, stomping, and shuffling. It also incorporates movements from many other sources such as whacking, voguing, Capoeira, tap, and Latin dances such as salsa. Other moves that are found in a wide variety of dance styles and are also important elements in house include slides, spins and toe taps. The foundation movement in house dancing is a technique that came from Chicago that involves moving the torso forward and backward in a rippling motion, as if a wave were passing through it. When this movement is repeated and sped up to match the beat of a song it is called jacking, or "the jack." All footwork in house dancing is said to initiate from the way the jack moves the center of gravity through space. In house dancing there is an emphasis on the subtle rhythms and riffs of the music, and the footwork follows them closely. This is one of the main features that distinguishes house dancing from dancing that was done to disco before house emerged, and current dancing that is done to techno as part of the rave culture.
Jazzfunk: Is also a fussion dance, that included the same elements as hip hop dance. The warmup of the classes are more technical (jazz) and the students get a more flexible body.
Jazz/ Teknik: Jazz dance is an umbrella term that can refer to several related dance styles. All of them are connected via common roots, namely tap, jazz music, and African-American rhythms and dance. To excel in jazz dance, the dancer must master ballet techniques. Jazz dancers' movements are often big and exaggerated..
