Heroes:
Justify My Love was born from the brainstorming process of Calvin West, a female-to-male transgender resident of San Francisco. In search of a solution to fund his own chest surgery, Calvin thought to put his eight years of event planning experience to greater use and expand his fundraising efforts to benefit a larger part of his community. Despite being a significant portion of the population, both in the Bay Area, and beyond, transgender, transsexual, and gender queer folks still experience an appalling amount of social and institutional oppression. We, and often our families, are denied many basic rights, simply because we do not fit into society’s structures for gender. We frequently face substandard treatment in the public sphere, we live with the threat of violence to our lives, struggle to find and/or keep employment, and in most cases, are not afforded trans-friendly health insurance to cover transitional surgeries, life-time hormone therapy, and many other costs particular to transgender identity. Court ordered name changes can also be exspensive. The overwhelming lack of support and inclusion of transgender, transsexual, and gender queer people within the health care system forces many of us plotted all over the gender spectrum to dig deep into our pockets. Transgender exclusionary policies still practiced by most health insurance programs today force many transgender folks to find creative, and sometimes dangerous, means of gaining access to the care and procedures necessary to feel healthy, beautiful, safe, comfortable, and alive. Our intention is to provide the Queer Community and its allies with a safe space, a lot of fun, and a sense of unity, while raising awareness through community action. With your support for this event, we can lend a hand to those in need while bringing light to an issue that is central for many residents of the Bay Area. The proceeds of this event will be put into scholarships intended to subsidize costs of hormones, surgery, name changes and other transgender related expenses. More details on how to apply will be made available soon.Hope to see you there!
