Peter Pace, and many more. * * * One of my most enjoyable experiences involved two of my favorites. When I was working at KALB Radio in Alexandria, Louisiana, in the late-1950s, my roomate was U. S. Army 101st Aiborne Maj. Jack Harrington (Retired) who had been one of Gen. George Patton's aids during World War II. Tex Ritter, John Ritter's father, was performing in a local nightclub. Jack and I decided to go see his show. While Tex was onstage doing his show, a nearby table of intoxicated local rowdies were heckling him and just generally being jerks. I was infuriated by their atrocious behavior and lack of respect and manners. Despite Jack trying to restrain me, I got up and went over to their table, and told them what I thought of them and that they needed to "shut up and be quiet or get out...NOW!" They asked, "And who's gonna make us?" I answered, "Me...if I have to." Instantly, they all started pushing their chairs back from the table, and I was ready for a knock-down, drag-out brawl. But they didn't go ahead and get up. "Me, too," a determined voice said. "And me, too," said another low-pitched voice. I quickly glanced around to see Jack and Tex standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me. The suddenly sheepish young men sat quietly after that, and everyone enjoyed Tex Ritter's performance. After his show Tex joined Jack and me at our table, and we had a great time. I have forever been grateful for the blessing of knowing the Beaumont, Texas, attorney that became such a big success as a singing cowboy star. He was a gentle and good man. John Ritter was blessed to have him as his father.

Anything that is good in its class or category. I am a bit partial to 1950s, 1960s and 1970s Rock-and-Roll, Classic Rock, and Southern Gospel. And I am still an Elvis Presley fan. I often listen to SIRIUS Satellite 13, "all Elvis all of the time, " especially "Elvis Gospel" 7 to 9 AM CDT Sunday mornings. But I also like anything good from Country and Raggae to Classical and Opera. "Music is the international language." It speaks to all of us...if we let it. * * * Although I never met Elvis, I have enjoyed meeting and even working with some of his friends and relatives, and I had the great pleasure of meeting and getting to know Priscilla in the early-1980s. I introduced her to my son Damon(e), and he said, "Dad, that's the most beautiful woman I have ever seen." And she is beautiful inside, too. I wish Priscilla the best always!
I almost never watch movies, and never go to a movie theatre. But anything that's good in its class or category is fine with me. I prefer action movies, but I enjoy all well-done movies. Some films that immediately come to mind are the original "King Kong," "The Wizard of Oz," "Snow Wite And The Seven Dwarfs," tne original "Stagecoach," "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington," "The Maltese Falcon," "The Grapes Of Wrath," "Casablanca," "Yankee Doodle Dandy," "Notorious," "Red River," "The Third Man," "A Streetcar Named Desire," "Roman Holiday," "On The Waterfront," "Rear Window," "Rebel Without A Cause," "The African Queen," "Singing In The Rain," "Bambi," "Salome," "Gone With The Wind," "The Searchers," "Some Like It Hot," "And God Created Woman," "La Dolce Vita," "The Wild Ones," "Exodus," "High Noon," "Shane," "Long Hot Summer," "Clockwork Orange," "Bullitt," "To Hell And Back," "Lolita," "The Bridge Over The River Kwai," "Ben Hur," "North By Northwest," "Psycho," "The West Side Story," "To Kill A Mockingbird," "Lawrence Of Arabia," "Dr. Strangelove," "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf," "Bonnie And Clyde," "The Graduate," "Easy Rider," "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Midnight Cowboy," "The Wild Bunch," "The Godfather," "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest," "Taxi Driver," "Star Wars," "Godfatherm II," "Jaws," "The French Connection," "Rio Bravo," "Pretty Woman," "Schlinder's List," "The Patriot," and many more, as well as all of the movies starring John Wayne, Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood, especially his "Spaghetti Westerns" and the Dirty Harry movies. (However, instead of "Dirty Harry's" Colt 629, I much prefer my big double-action Ruger Redhawk .44-Magnum with the 7-1/2 inch barrel.) I think Walter Brennan was one of the greatest actors ever. And I always enjoy Bridget Bardot, Marilyn Monroe, Anita Ekberg, Sophia Loren, Elke Summer, Elizabeth Taylor, Jody Foster, Drew Barrymore, Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Angelina Jolie, Renee Zellweger, Cameron Diaz, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Anniston, Jennifer Garner, Jennifer Lopez, Naomi Watts and Patricia Heaton. * * * My father was a 1930s musician, singer and Western swing band leader who had music stores and radio shows throughout Texas and the South. He and Leonard Slye, the lead singer with the Sons of the Pioneers at the time, were good friends. When they had a break in their schedules, Dad and Leonard would go up to the Slye ranch and ride, rope and shoot. My Dad was great with a shotgun and rifle, but Leonard would occasionally beat him with a rifle, and he would always outshoot my Dad with his Colt revolver. Dad said he would throw a handful of six silver dollars in the air, and Leonard would hit every one of them with his Colt. Leonard Slye eventually left the Sons of the Puoneers, went to Hollywood, and made history as Roy Rogers, "King of the Cowboys," a Western movie star who could actually ride, rope and shoot just as well as the character he portrayed on the silver screen. And he was one of the nicest, real he-men who ever lived. * * * When I met Audie Murphy, the USA's most decorated World War II hero in a DeRidder, Louisiana, radio station in the mid-1950s, I was impressed with his humility and his quiet, mild manner...and I thought, "No wonder the Germans couldn't kill him; he was too small to hit." But he was one of the biggest men and the most honorable gentleman that I have ever met. I shall never forget him.
Four of the funniest shows that I have seen on television are "Becker," "Two And A Half Men," "Desperate Housewives" and "Monk." One of the most realistic is "The Sopranos." The best television production ever is by far "24." There are several other shows I used to enjoy, like "The Unit," the "CSIs, "Gilmore Girls," "America's Funniest Videos," and some of the reality shows, like "Survivor," "Big Brother," "The Great Race," "American Idol" and "America's Got Talent." But lately I only watch documentary crime shows, the History Channel and live news, especially local and FOX News. I miss new episodes of "Friends," "Sex In The City" and "Everybody Loves Raymond." And I dearly miss the healthy humor of George Burns, Red Skelton, Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, and Johnny Carson and all of his great Jewish comedian guests with their clean but hilarious humor. But I watch television very little nowadays. It just seems like a big waste of time.
The Bible. It has a little bit of everything, including geneaology, history, poetry, mystery, intrigue, romance, sex, violence, war and more. Pick up a copy of the new International Version, start reading and you'll be hard-pressed to put it down. I subscribe to many current events publications, as well as Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, motorcycle magazines, automobile magazines, National Geopgraphic and others. Plus...several of the organizations to which I belong publish magazines.
